Working in the Probation, Essay Example

Essay

Working in the Probation and Parole Field

Probation officers are typically responsible for monitoring the progress of individuals that have been placed on probation. This job appears to be interesting because rather than working from a desk all day, the probation officer benefits by visiting the probationers home and work in order to gain a better understanding of the progress that they are making. Furthermore, these practices not only make this job more interesting than a law enforcement desk job, but it is reasonable to see how this level of involvement could help improve the life of a probationer. Ultimately, it appears that the probation officer becomes present in their lives not only to monitor their progress, but to provide the probationers with advice as needed so that they are able to stay on track.

While the work of a parole officer appears to be similar to that of a probation officer, it is important to understand that the two workers are accountable under different government systems. Furthermore, the parole officer is more likely to work with individuals that have spent a long time in prison. Therefore, their job is to not only supervise the activities of their clients, they also help these individuals adjust to life outside of bars. Overall, this particular position appears to be more challenging than the position of probation officer, but it is important to consider that these individuals have the opportunity to more significantly change the lives of their clients. As a result, it appears that the role of parole officer would be a more rewarding position as well. Therefore, I would prefer to be a parole officer than a probation officer because this would allow me to make a bigger difference in the lives of people in need.
