Recent news items at the World Trade Organization web-site include: an article regarding the creation of board that will inquire into “anti-dumping” measures in the steel industry, an article regarding OECD Global Forum and WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy’s comments on strong competition, and an article announcing the creation of a new essay award for student economists. The three news articles provide a snapshot of the current activities of the WTO and its policies and ideals. The three articles also show, when taken together, that the WTO is an always-expanding entity, one that pushes parameters of policy and public-outreach while maintaining a high standard of leadership and stability.

The first article describes how “measures imposed by the United States on steel products from Korea” (WTO) have resulted in a creation of a panel that will moderate standards in regard to China and the Dominican Republic. A summary of the meeting includes information about Korea’s request to review the U.S. anti-dumping measures, as well as summaries of the positions held by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The activities reported in the article and summary are highly relevant in regard to safety standards in International trade.

The second article reported on WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy’s recent speech at the OECD Global Forum. This article focused on Lamy’s conviction that ““strong competition policies are an essential element of a dynamic and healthy market economy ” (WTO). This is a very important consideration in understanding the mission and scope oof the WTO as a whole. The full-text of the speech was also linked through the new-article, which allows readers to explore, in depth, how Lamy intends to implement his ideals. The third article, about the creation of an essay-award for young economists, is a good article for showing the WTO’s interaction with students and the public. It announces not only the rules for the competition, but the cash-prize as well as the names of the judges on the award-panel.
