Movie Review

When movies are real-life physiological problems, it can be used to education and captivate the viewing audience equally.  A Beautiful Mind is about a brilliant academic student who suffers from schizophrenia. What makes this movie even more intriguing is the fact that it is based on a true story.  Essentially the story begins with John Forbes Nash Jr., a mathematical genius, beginning his Princeton Education.  His intelligence provided him an opportunity to do anything he set his mind to.  It could be seen that he became quite obsessed with finding a way to prove things that were important to him, and competed in Princeton’s excessively brutal math department.  His goal was to find something unique that really mattered.  As a result of a bar rivalry he develops his game theory.  The beauty of his theory is that it contradicts 150 years of theory that earned him his spot at MIT.

One of the other eager students, Alicia Larde enters the film at this point. As predictable as it is Alicia fell for the socially-backwards Nash.  She invited him to dinner and that begins a relationship that Nash has to fit into his very structured world.  As the movie progresses, the mental issues associated with Nash becomes worse, making it apparent.  Alicia remains and is the one thing that he can dependable and steadfast.  The CIA pursues the unstable Nash to employ him for breaking codes.  However due to Nash’s inability to perceive reality he finds a battle to simply maintain his minimal hold on sanity.  Alicia predicts that Nash’s illness is paranoid schizophrenia.  Decades of mental illness battles, Alicia remained by his side.  Nash went on to learn how to manage his mental illness and win the Nobel Prize.
