A Victory for the Pharisees, Article Critique Example

The Tribune 242 article titled, “A Victory for the Pharisees”, by news editor Paco Nunez focuses on the outcome of the gambling referendum vote. The referendum to legalize casino gambling for Bahamian citizens was recently defeated and according to the news editor’s opinion, the defeat of this referendum will have many negative consequences for the country. In the opinion article Nunez lays out why he believes the referendum was defeated and presents arguments to support the negative consequences he believes the country may suffer.

Nunez presents a lot of information in this 970 word article. He lists a variety of valid reasons that could have contributed to the failure to pass the gambling referendum. His points for distrust of the conservative right are well supported, such as the introduction of a previous Christian Council issue concerning a man’s sexual rights regarding his wife. Nunez’s use of quotes validate his warning of negative consequence for social progress by showing the concern is shared by other Bahamians as well, and that the conservative right’s stance does not match with that of other western countries.

The last fourth of the article, Nunez switches from his attack on the “Save Our Bahamas” group and outlines how the Progressive Liberal Party failed to fully support the referendum, and in failing the referendum, failed to serve their purpose. In this section, Nunez makes positive statements about the conservative right and negative statements about the left, leaving the reader confused about his support for the Progressive Liberal Party.
