Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, Personal Statement Example

Personal Statement

In applying for the Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP) program at the University of Lowell, I am in effect moving directly forward with the ambitions that have guided my career and my life thus far.  Nursing itself is, in my estimation, a calling that defines the nurse’s life, and the two are inextricably connected.  In no uncertain terms, that has been my own experience. Being a nurse has defined my adult life and I can honestly conceive of no other profession. This being the case, my ten years of working as a Licensed Practical Nurse has broadened my sense of how I need to proceed, just as this experience has been invaluable in providing me with knowledge of the realities of nursing.  I have earned my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing, and my work is extremely fulfilling to me.  A quality of nursing, however, is that the greater involvement in it translates to the motive to commit more deeply to the work, and the need to develop the skills and learning essential to practicing at the highest levels.  Then, we tend to perceive more where our true interests lie as we engage in care professionally, and I have as well long been aware that the AGNP role is the one in which I will be most satisfied, and because it is the role to which my nature and skills are drawn.  Providing care on any level is of the utmost importance to me.  Nonetheless, a good nurse understands that a part of their responsibility goes to turning to whatever direction reflects and enables their best efforts.  For me, it is the AGNP program, because achieving my degree in this translates to acquiring the background essential to my strongest abilities and interests as a nurse.  This is a field of study expanding all the time, as we learn more about how care is most effectively and humanely applied to adults and the elderly, and I want very much to be a part of this evolution in nursing care.  It is my primary ambition, and to that end I intend to commit my energies, experience, and capabilities.  To be the nurse I want to be, in plain terms, it is essential to me that I earn my Master’s in the AGNP program.

This form of commitment, however, is not enough.  The ambition itself demands that I gain my education at the best possible school, and all of my research points to UMass Lowell as offering exactly this opportunity.  From everything I gather, the AGNP program focuses on advanced learning, and in the many aspects of nursing relevant to senior populations.  The specialty courses in Adult/Gerontological and Family Health Nursing go to vital instruction in communication, health assessments, and interventions, with an emphasis on how aging patients require different approaches. With the program comes both theoretical and practical instruction, and I believe both are necessary to meet the challenges of the work correctly. Long-term care is of particular interest to me, and my research indicates the UMass provides the latest learning in this area combined with practical care teaching scenarios.  My work thus far has enabled me to understand how senior needs differ from the ordinary, and that the nurse serving the elderly must apply care specifically tailored to these patients.  As the student advances in knowledge, there is a greater awareness and information base provided, and in a way enabling practice at this high level.  UMass essentially equips the working nurse to provide the care most necessary for older adults, which in turn involves a better education in addressing family concerns.  It is the totality of the Adult-Gerontology field that the program addresses, and this more than anything informs me that the school is absolutely where I need to be. That UMass enjoys a prestigious reputation as a leader in nursing education further confirms my choice.  To that end, I cannot overstate to the school that, upon acceptance, my commitment to the AGNP program will be nothing less than my commitment to nursing itself.
