How I Became a Nurse, Personal Statement Example

Pages: 2

Words: 511

Personal Statement

Working in the healthcare field commenced with taking care of my grandmother with pancreatic cancer, my father with idiopathic lung disease and my niece suffering from birth trauma provided me with the essential experience of caring for patients due to their vulnerable conditions. I learned to be patient, compassionate and empathetic. I had the pleasure of caring for my father before he unexpectedly passed away. The shock of this experience shook me to my core. I had been my father’s advocate during his illness, making sure he had the right food he could swallow, a comfortable mattress to prevent pressure sores, and enough pain medication when he needed it. While this was one of the most painful experiences I have ever gone through, it also solidified my determination to pursue becoming a nurse practitioner. Therefore, I have always yearned to love and care for others in need and expand my nursing knowledge and education. Connecting with my family members and patient on an empathetic and clinical level led to my acknowledgment that I was on the right career path. Advocating for my father has shown me the significance of a patient’s voice and their inclusion in health care treatment at their comfort.

My nursing education journey commenced as a CNA before earning my ADN and BSN degrees. I had nursing experiences at Tamalpais Pediatrics and Kentfield Hospital, where I cared for patients of all ages and ethnicities in the healthcare spectrum. I tended to patients with minor injuries and diseases and those critically ill and injured. I learned how to be patient, kind, accountable and compassionate.

My motivation for being a family nurse practitioner stems from the need to care for others, which is respectable since it entails devotion to someone’s day and life to improve their well-being and make them happy. It is one of the beautiful options I have been making and intend on continuing to make to serve others. The early family experience has equipped me with the skills to improve my knowledge. Working with patients and family members taught me to connect with patients and build rapport as a nurse. The learning practice and experience have provided me with a chance to improve my desire to be an FNP. My experiences working with patients from all at Tamalpais Pediatrics and Kentfield Hospital have prepared me to be responsible and accountable as a responsible leader. Working at the hospital at first, I dealt with new patients, and had to deliver while working for many hours. I believe nursing is a career that can be demanding and fulfilling.

My background, education and professional journey have helped nurture my identity and shaped my basis as a nurse. Therefore, attending the UCSF Family Nurse Practitioner Program will incorporate my experiences and professional nursing practices into my responsibility as a primary care provider. The opportunity will motivate my respect and trust for patients while advocating for and improving their health. I am confident that my maturity, skills and ambition have prepared me for the FNP program’s success.
