In American Literature of the first half of the twentieth century, different themes dominated the literary scene but the idea of using characters who felt trapped was common. Most artists used characters who feel trapped in their literary works. These include for instance, Edwin Robison, David Roesel, and Langston Hughes to mention just a few. In most instances, the authors in their poems capture the need for America to understand and define their identity. First, the idea of feeling trapped in life is seen in the characters of poetry of the early twentieth century. Like in the poems of Langston Hughes and Edwin Robison, Their literary works were replete of American native culture, traditional literature, and other local narratives. in the works of Edwin A. Robinson for instance, the author mostly blended legends, folk tells and other forms of oral literature to come up with very interesting works. Literature was the main channel used by artists to perpetuate American culture. Its uniqueness attracted the attention of many people that is why artists were always trapped in the same topics.

In addition, the fiction of the early twentieth century also uses characters who feel trapped in their lives. Throughout the twentieth century, certain issues that dominated the Society guided literature. Authors like John Steinbeck, Richard Wright, and William Faulkner mostly highlighted on equality and the struggle of the minority in their fiction stories from the well-preserved oral narratives or even poems. They continued to talked about the plight of workers, the underprivileged, and their rights in the.

The earliest American literature consists of impressions of America as told by European explorers. The common themes at that time were the struggle of the poor or rights of the minority. Most of American native literature vanished on the onset of European exploration. However, its spirit did not die completely; it has been passed down from generation to generation in the form of poetry.
