For many years, the United States has led the way in making transitional methods and routes possible for those considering adding the B.S.N. degree to the already lofty R.N. In days past, this has been, for many, a matter of personal preference, and even a mark of achievement, worthy in many cases of higher pay, better working conditions, and more varied assignments and opportunities. However, it is now apparent that the formerly elective Baccalaureate degree in Nursing may soon become a more staple requirement.

In 2010, The Institute of Medicine recommended that 80% of RNs should become ready to make the transition to the level of BSN by the year 2020. This is in response to a forthcoming mandate which would require all California staff (RN Staff), to be augmented by at least one BSN. As this would imply, the former elective may now become a very real requirement.

Perfetto utilized the Noblit and Hare’s method in evaluating the statistics involved in the furtherance of study from RN to BSN. Included in this study is a forecasting of a national goal, in which 80% of today’s RN’s will be able to achieve the status of BSN by 2020. Also noted, is the estimate that as of now, only 21% of RN are capable of meeting the stringent requirements set forth in a program of study at the BSN level.

This group of findings begins to set out the standard by which future RN’s and BSN’s may be able to judge their role in the growing field of healthcare. It also challenges those already in the healthcare to assist in helping to develop educational programs which will become beneficial in this very important transitional period in healthcare.

Utilizing data from the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses in 2000, 2004, & 2008– Spetz begins the argument of reporting on the benefits that an RN may expect to gain, should that person go on to fulfill the requirements of the degree of B.S.N. Indeed, while many are clamoring for more BSN’s to govern and teach the in the public forum, some others are standing by, and asking the pertinent question regarding added benefits to the student who is doing the work, and earning those extra credentials.

Considered in the survey are cost, time, job placement, and quality in life (before and after) a furtherance in education. Also discussed are some of the real differences between the two degrees, as well as which candidates might be best suited for either one. Finally, the study attempts to determine the cost/benefit analysis, over and beyond those of an RN, for one who does decide to invest the added time, energy and resources into gaining a BSN.
