Anonymous in their Own Names by Ruth Hale, Doris Fleischman and Jane Grant

For every success of a man, there is a woman working behind him. This common saying has specifically outlined the course of writing that Hale, Fleischmann and Grant utilized in their book Anonymous in their Own Names. During the time when they wrote about the condition of living that the women had to contend with, women were less regarded in the society while men were hailed even more than the success that they have incurred. Serving as minorities in the community, these women are described as mere support to their partners. Nevertheless, it is constituted within this writing that the very existence of these women became the cause for their husbands to attain relative success in their own fields of interest.

The authors specifically presented their own stories as unnamed spouses of the successful men that they were married to. Fleischman in particular mentioned how her intellectual capacities were part of the success that the business of her husband attained and yet her name was never fully recognized in the organization. Nevertheless, the connection that the couple had between each other allowed Fleischman to realize that whatever it was that her husband is able to attain defines her own capacities as a woman and as an individual. With full control of who she is and what she can do for the sake of attaining success not only for her but also for her husband as well, Fleischman was able to identify herself along with the being of her husband.

On the other hand, Hale admitted that she worked hand in hand with her husband throughout the years of their marriage. Through her, the writing of her husband became more in depth, more realizable and more practical for the target readers. Notably, while her husband was a good writer, he lacked the braveness and the courage to define himself along with his thoughts and become more forceful in telling or writing what he feels about a certain issue. In relation to this, Hale then became the conscience of her husband’ writing therefore giving him a better sense of control on how he is supposed to present his topic that would likely appeal to his target audience.

Grant also had her own share of the story. Helping her husband in research publication, she managed to organize how the New Yorker [reading material] was established as a strong and unbounded source of information for the public. Finding ways to gain the right staff and manifesting operations that would help smooth out the procedures of directing information for presentation and distribution to the community, Grant made it a point that every work in the New Yorker was done for a cause. Thinking of the public as the main receiver of the information, she made it a point that her husband would know what the public needs and what data they would likely demand for. With this approach, this reading material became a public favorite up to this day.

True, women may not be fully recognized in the past. However, this situation did not pull away Grant, Hale, Fleischman and other women to push through for the possible role that they could take in assisting their husbands attain the success that they want and deserve. The act may be selfless but the results are relatively positive which remains intact at present. The three women featured in this book made it a point that they would be able to influence other women to be thankful for whatever role they were given especially when they are in relationship with a man who simply wants a chance to attaining success. Viewing the matter as an opportunity to provide support to their spouses, Hale, Grand and Fleischman presented themselves as the epitome of nameless women who are worthy enough of being recognized in the fields where their husbands chose to rise above the challenge.
