You may be aware that I missed three weeks of school and the team assignments given during the period. My brother has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the incident took a huge emotional toll on me. The incident came as a huge shock to me and there were moments when I felt I have lost control of my life because I could not think about anything nor concentrate on any task. But I realize none of this excuses me from my responsibilities towards coursework obligations and team assignments.

I am mindful of the fact that every one of you juggles with numerous responsibilities besides schoolwork and my absence might have made things very difficult for some of you. I know from my personal experience that we often tend to underestimate the problems other people may be facing and overestimate our own difficulties. I would like to stress the fact that not for a moment, I thought that my problems are greater than any of you just because I didn’t know what problems you may have. You have my deepest regards and thanks for the support you have given me and I am very fortunate to have such understanding teammates.

I believe that in the end our problems are our problems and it is our responsibility to deal with them and not put unnecessary burden on the other. I might not have been able to attend school for three weeks and the tragedy that struck my family is no ordinary one, this doesn’t exempt me from my duties towards my coursework and my team mates. I have every desire and intention to make up for my absence by taking greater responsibility in the future and make up in any way possible. I feel really blessed to have wonderful and understanding team mates like youand I hope I don’t disappoint you.

I believe that even the most painful experiences have the potential to teach us valuable things. This experience has helped me realize the importance of my friends and colleagues. I want you to know that if it were not for your support, bearing with this family tragedy would be even more difficult. You may be my colleague only but your kindness means a lot to me and has helped strengthen my belief in the goodness of people. You have inspired me to become a better human being and from now onwards, I hope to be a more compassionate and understanding friend to those I know as well as those who may be total strangers to me.

I have also taken steps to ensure that I don’t miss on my school obligations anymore because first of all it is not fair to those who put their trust in me to do my part of the assignment and second, I still have not been able to get over the guilt of putting my team in a difficult situation due to my personal circumstances. I admire your professionalism and dedication and I know some of you may have even tougher problems to deal with but you have never let them come in the way of your college obligations. One of my uncles is a professional therapist and he has been giving me suggestions to cope better with my brother’s situation and not let it affect my every day productivity.

I also want you to know that I would do anything to ensure that your hard work doesn’t go in vain and you get the proper credit for your efforts. If you say, I may talk to the professor and let him know of my situation and how it put you in a difficult position. I so wish that my absence doesn’t have any negative impact on the grades my team mates deserve and please do not hesitate to let me know if there is something I can do. You have been so wonderful to me and I would hate it if your grade suffers because of me. I am also willing to do more than my part from now on to make up for my absence.

I realize there are some things I should have done that I didn’t do. I should have kept you better informed of my situation but the stress really took control of me. I could not think about anything except my brother. When I finally recovered a bit from the shock, I thought about my obligations as a team member felt guilty on missing the school and the team assignments. I even thought of dropping the course but then decided I would do everything in my capacity to make up for my absence and make sure that my team mates get their due credit for their hard work. Over the past few days I have been thinking a lot about what I can do as an apology to you guys because it was my personal problem yet I allowed it to get out of control and put unfair burden on you guys.

I pray to God that He blesses all of you beyond your imaginations for being such wonderful and understanding human beings and I wish you all the happiness in life. I could not ask for better team mates than you guys. If there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to let me know. You will be doing me a huge favor because it will help me get past the guilt of making things difficult for you. I am still worried about my brother but from now onwards, I have decided to not let the worry affect my everyday obligations.
