Article Critique

The research is well written, well laid out research that is free of difficult jargon in which their target audience, parents and health administrators, are able to read. The purpose of this research which was clearly identified in the research, was to discuss the early intervention programs that are key factors in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Other research that shows the importance of early prevention includes, Boyd et al. 2010; Al-Qabandi et al. 2011; and Helt et al. 2008. The problem that the research points out is that the programs such as Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is not readily deliverable or available with the communities, which results in children with Autism in preschool and early years missing out on early intervention programs. (Dawson, et al. 2009) The authors provide a credible elements in which they talk at lengths on ASD, and early prevention programs that are capable of helping young students in a community setting.

The research design on the paper follows the logical manner in which the steps naturally flow and are organized to outline their conceptual framework, aims, and ethical considerations in conducting their research. Approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee, and the University of New South Wales, they recruited their sample from families that were given their consent and in line with the Helsinki Declaration. The research design was a pre-post study of study of children that with ESDM. (Eapen et al. 2013) The design is adequate in providing results of how ESDM is applied to a group, and each therapist was expertly trained in conducted in the program to preschool children. Some families did not complete the measures in the necessary timeframes that resulted in missing data. This is an area that could be improved in future studies. Each student was worked with individually, and parents had the option of having training in ESDM. In testing out the purpose the study, the ESDM was delivered to small groups in school settings. The research design was measured on the standard Mullen Scales of Early Learning, the Social Communication Questionnaire (parents), and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales Second Edition. The results indicated that ESDM conducted in group settings to young children with ASD improved their social attention, communication skills, and visual reception. The research while useful in implementing early prevention programs for young children with ASD, there can be improvements, that include more parent participation, testing other alternatives that can be conducted at home and in school settings (Roberts and Ridley 2004), and more attention paid to those that have different ranges of ASD, to adequately test its effectiveness.
