Stakeholder theory is an important concept that is applicable to the hospital setting in a variety of ways. As a hospital CEO, patients, corporate sponsors, other donors, family members, and employees are key stakeholders who contribute to the hospital to maximize its level of quality and wellbeing. Therefore, the role of the CEO is not only to recognize these contributions, but to also improve the quality of care and treatment that is provided to the patient population, while also remaining under the desired budgetary limitations. In spite of financial challenges, quality, technology, and improvement should not be compromised, and should be recognized as critical factors in moving the organization forward in its desired objectives. Stakeholder theory utilizes different forms of knowledge as a means of improving the organization from the top down through collaboration and compromise (Barrett). This practice also engages stakeholders in the organizational vision and mission to ensure that all needs are being met in a timely and efficient manner (Barrett).

It is the responsibility of the hospital and its key leadership infrastructure to be aware of how its decisions impact the entire organization, and to determine what means are necessary to maximize the cohesiveness and strength of the structure as best as possible (Mayer). The hospital depends on its stakeholders to promote its survival and livelihood, and therefore, these individuals should be provided with the best possible product for the contributions that they make under all conditions (Mayer). Even under difficult financial conditions, the organization must emphasize its ability to be effective in supporting the needs of patients through the provision of high quality care and treatment all times to promote optimal health and recovery for all persons.
