Is Overpopulation Good or Not: A Choice between Benefiting the Economy or Preserving the Resources
The Issue
Progress is one aspect of human living that many sociologists consider to be inevitable. Considerably, it could be noticed that this claim is indeed true, especially when it comes to the definition of what is obviously happening at present. It could be analyzed that at some point, the human definition of progress is dedicated to the realization of change and transformation. Hence, along with progress, even modern human culture has already changed. One aspect of change that could be accounted for in accordance with this is that of the process of embracing the culture of development. One particular matter to consider is that of the fact that preservation of resources has become less likely given attention to in comparison with how extensive developments have been intended to be realized. Expansion of urban areas and industrializing different locations around the globe continue to be the main focus of administrators, at times at the expense of the natural resources being relatively reduced to number with extensive wastage. Population growth is also being considered as a primary issue that makes it harder to preserve natural resources for future human use.
Since global development cannot be halted as it is, population control is now being viewed to be the primary course of adjustment that should be given attention to. Question is, the increased number of human population is expected to support extensive economic developments which is needed for progress, how then could progress continue if population growth is halted or at some point controlled? Which particular element of human living should be given more importance, economic development for the sake of progress or the preservation of natural resources for the sake of prolonged survival?
The Pro Argument
The staggering number of individuals living in most urbanized areas around the globe account for the growth of economy. The irony behind this fact though is that although there has already been a dramatic drop of number of births among women [due to development of the career and education culture for women] the rate of population still does not stop to increase. Relatively, it could be assumed that it is because of the already populated rate and the continuous reproduction that does not specifically lower down the growth of the human population. Michael Mayer argues though that it is the production of younger generation that further boosts the development of the economy. The demographic consideration on how the young ones are able to come up with change provides a definite indication that increased number of young individuals in the society develops the strength of the economy to build up its fortress for further development. Notably, Mayer insists that controlling how resources are used is the answer and not putting a limitation on how the population boosts higher demographics of the younger generation who are capable of pushing the current generation into a more progressive civilization of the future.
The Con of the Argument
Julia Whitty considers population to be an important element to human development. However, its extensive growth also hurts that desire of progress drastically. Citing examples from the former beautiful territories of the arctic regions, she mentions how the natural resources are being butchered by the human population just so to be able to find a practical place to stay in, a stance by which most individuals embracing progress are giving so much importance to at present. Whitty notes that even with discipline and all, providing the current generation with the supplies it needs would account for the extensive exploitation of natural resources that specifically support the need of humans to survive. If progress is vital, it should not account for the loss of what vital elements are needed to support human survival which is the natural resource that ought to be protected rather than overused, exploited and specifically placed in the background behind the desire of defining demographics as a source of economic competence that is much needed for progress.
Personal Analysis
Natural resource is basically a vital part of human survival. Protecting it is essential to making extensive procedures of embracing progress due to the fact that it is the sole source of support that human life depends upon. True, demographic focus on the younger generation has flourished in supporting extensive advancement especially in most urban cities; nevertheless, this should not cause the human society to turn their backs on the fact that without the robust provisions of the natural resources, progress will be worthless. True, discipline on the utilization of natural resources could help, but it will never be able to resolve the fact that the fast lost of control on how natural resources are preserved would later on cause the dire survival of human individuals. What is more worthy than assuring that the next generation would still be able to survive? Progress would only become a boon if it could not assure the safety, security and assured survival of the future. It is now time to choose between what is essential and what is secondary among the priorities that human place their attention to.
