Biology and Chemistry, Personal Statement Example

As young individuals, we often dream about our future professions. These dreams are shaped by a wide range of factors such as the profession of our parents or someone we admire, our interests, and/or our vision of the future. It is also not uncommon for professional goals to change over time as individuals learn more about them. But as far as I remember, I have always wanted to go into the medical profession. Early in my life I decided not to choose a profession which is just a source of income and social status but to choose a profession that will allow me to bring comfort to the lives of many. There is no blessing greater than good health and I have always known I will specifically work towards advancing healthcare standards among some of the most vulnerable members of the society.

But I am not oblivious to the fact that one cannot reach his/her true potential unless there is a good match between the demands of the chosen profession and the skills/strengths of the individual. This is why I have challenged myself again and again in sciences whether in academics or work and each experience has only further boosted my confidence that I have made the right choice. I have not even a slight doubt that medical profession is where I will not only be able to make the most difference in the society but it is also where I will realize my true potential. I currently have a cumulative GPA of 3.98 and expect to graduate from Florida International University (FIU) with an undergraduate degree in Biology next year. I have provided tutoring to FIU students in both Biology and Chemistry and am also a clinical lab researcher at FIU. In addition, I have been working at Jackson Ryder Trauma Center in different capacities since November 2012.

I could not have been more excited to pursue a profession in the medical field. I am quite inquisitive and am always striving to learn more and more in the field of medicine. We are now witnessing some of the most radical advances in medical field which have also been enabled by tremendous technological progress especially in genetics. I desire to be part of this medical renaissance that is currently underway and cannot even imagine the progress that may occur in the next decade, let alone beyond that. I also feel inspired to learn more about medicine because some experiences cannot be described in words and bringing comfort to sick and weak is one of those experiences. In addition to my experiences in the U.S., I have also served poor families in China as a member of International Scholar Laureate Medical Mission last year. The experience has made me a believer in Gates Foundation philosophy that economic standards around the world cannot be improved in the real sense unless health standards are raised among the poorest citizens of the world.

One cannot underestimate the importance of personal experiences in shaping people and my personal experiences have also played a major role towards my desire to help the most vulnerable members of our societies worldwide. I am the youngest of three siblings and my parents divorced when I was only two years old. My mom didn’t only make numerous personal sacrifices to raise us but did so while keeping her job as a teacher. She would often say one should not forget his/her responsibilities towards others, even in the most difficult of times. I am also mindful of the fact that many individuals have helped me over the years, especially my high school teachers and I could not have been here without the kindness of many. I personally understand that communities prosper when they take care of the weakest members and I hope my life will improve the lives of many and give them an opportunity to shape their own fate.
