Boricua College as a TESOL, Capstone Project Example

The purpose of my portfolio is to present my Capstone Portfolio to the faculty of Boricua College as a TESOL master’s degree student. This work demonstrates the mastery of my subject area content, as it draws from my experience as a teacher in the public school system of NYC to provide recommendations for other TESOL teachers. Since this student population is prevalent in New York City, it is essential to develop best practice in the field so that these individuals are able to master the same subject area content as their native English speaking peers.

The portfolio aims to demonstrate the skills I have mastered as a student and professional. First, while I have had students that speak many different mother languages, I have learned that there are many similar themes in the education of these children. Second, the portfolio demonstrates the importance of understanding cultural competency to aid these students. Respecting the cultural experiences of children is necessary to support their ability to learn. Third, it is important to customize learning for all students. While all children are required to learn the same information, different scaffolding must be used to ensure that they are able to accomplish their educational goals.

Overall, I believe that the information presented in my Capstone Portfolio qualifies me for a master’s degree because I have demonstrated an enhanced ability to learn English as a second language students both during my time as a teacher and as a student at Boricua College. The skills that I have acquired throughout these experiences will helped me confer benefit to my students in the present, as it will continue to do so in the future.
