Introduction

The Disney musicals tells the story of the historical Newsboy Strike that happen in the late 1800s. The primary story is about Jack Kelly who was a young boy that dreamed of being a famous artist. The antagonist in the Broadway show is famous publisher Joseph Pulitzer who increases the prices of newspapers at the expense of the newsboys. Jack has the assistance of a beautiful report Katherine Plumber. The press received by Jack from Katherine creates the persona of Jack as the power of the little man. The influence is definitely Gene Kelly as they jump in the air bring back the memories of Gene Kelly. The style is a mixture of an athletic dance which include gymnastics with the grace of Fred Astaire. Choreographer

The choreographer philosophy of Christopher Gatelli was to create a musical that reach beyond the norms of a Broadway show. Christopher Gatelli philosophy was to create such a splendid array of sequencing dance moves that were so phenomenal. Gatelli was successful in creating a one of kind presentation of a Broadway dance that exciting the soul and made you feel the vibrations of the dances. He was successful delivering a masterpiece that has mixed different types of dance quite different from all his Broadway show choreographer predecessors.  The composers Alan Menken and Jack Feldman music was in synch perfecting with the dance steps.

Dance Style

The dancing was conceptual. The meaning that was conveyed with the dance was fighting the big establishment with energy. The athletic and exciting movements that included brilliant ballet with a style of Gene Kelly. The energy is what keeps the audiences coming back for more. The dance scenes are so amazing that many times the audience jump to their feet to applaud. The stage was created for visual effect because the cast members during the dances were space like a military naval march with precision. The timing was flawless with some many people dancing some many different dance moves including flipping, sliding, and jumping.

Critiques

The show was very pleasing to the eye and the dance was exciting from minute one to the end of the Broadway show. The amazing dancing and singing to a real life story of courage. The Broadway show is an event that the entire family can enjoy. The lead actor and dancer Jack Kelly did an amazing job. The choreographers intentions were convey because every dance routine was in sequence with athletic moves with acrobatics and ballet at its best. The choreographer did an excellent job of mixing the dance to relate to the hard times of the late 1890.

The tap dancing was amazing to watch. In a show, most of the time you will see maybe 2 or 3 people tap dancing but to see as many as 30 people tap dancing in sequence is great. The music was the sing along and dance music of the 1900 era. The music fit the theme of dancing newsboys. The lighting was excellent because they made sure the light was shining down on the dances and not shining into the face of the audience. The lighting was just enough not to distract from the Broadway show. The costumes, sets and props made the audience feel like it was 1899 and it made the Newsies show for real. Overall this show gets a four star rating and a must see for every family.
