Essay

The ethical dilemma in this position includes confidentiality. The dilemma, in this situation, arises when Blanca Lopez offers money to the employees of Association for Competitive Technology money in exchange of the trash. The trash may contain information about the company which information may be confidential. This will thus result in breach of confidentiality if the trash turned over to Lopez. The other ethical dilemma in the scenario is that of violating rules. The rules regarding the disposal of the trash per the company policy does not involve turning over the trash to individuals for their use rather provides for the appropriate disposal of the same. It is imperative to note that taking or receiving the trash results in taking things that do not belong to you and as such, an ethical dilemma arises.

Other perspectives of the cases in question follow the approach that the deeds by Lopez do not raise any ethical challenges on her side. Lopez was not under any obligation to act according to the ethics of Association for Competitive Technology. On the other hand, the employees of Association for Competitive Technology and their supervisor must act ethically as per their terms of employment. The offer by Lopez thus poses an ethical dilemma on their side, and they must overcome these ethical dilemmas. The ethical responsibility lies on the employees of ACT and have a responsibility to uphold the ethics of the company. The values in question are those held by the employees on the matter, and the organization’s position on the matter brings a conflict.

The rationalization of the issue can take an approach that there is no ethical dilemma in this situation. The perspective supported by the argument that the acts not prohibited since the trash was useless to the company. The trash in question was to be disposed, therefore, of no value to the company and, as a result, turning over the trash to an individual does not culminate in any ethical dilemma whatsoever. The employees do not have any obligation towards the company as regarding the method of disposal of waste, the method of disposal is irrelevant, and they do not face any ethical issues. The trash did not belong to Association for Competitive Technology any more as the same was to be disposed, and there results no ethical issues in the case.

In the resolution of this situation, the application of the Laura Nash model preferred. The problem in this situation is the turning over the trash from ACT to Lopez. The problem arises on the desired use of the trash by Lopez as this may expose the organization to unprecedented problems. The loyalty of the employees of ACT is to the organization and not to any other person so the ethics put forward by the interest of the company becomes paramount. The intention of the employees in this case is to safeguard the secrets of the company and avoid acts that can jeopardize the functioning of the company. The intention of the employee’s results in an effective outcome as there is nothing lost. The decision to decline the offer by Lopez does not injure anyone; therefore, the action desired. The exceptions of this position can only be practical if indeed the company involved in criminal activities and the right procedure relating to the request followed, but without this, the position holds.
