Can a “Health” System Kill a Country? Article Review Example

Article Review

The article insinuates that the current United State political arrangement does not provide it citizens with social hold up and infrastructure to keep the society being productive as well as happy in the social sphere. In this article, it is further evident that the current situation is becoming more or less impossible to have a prolific social support hence a problem. Billions of dollars are being spent on healthcare expenditure whose expenditure is ever increasing. It is known that the USA spends 16% of its GDP on health care hence being the most expensive and lacking social support. This leaves the deprived and the jobless being turned into commodities for the sole reason of feeding the ever growing heath sector expenditure. Any growing principal sector has to have a solid level of growing products and commodities to provide the income to sustain it. In the case of the heath care sector human beings are the commodities.

In comparison to the text, it emerges clearly that a study carried out by the general account office and other stakeholders concluded that, a collective sole payer healthcare system would cover millions of Americans including those without health insuarance and still see billions of dollars saved.  It is well know diabetes is among the top cause of death diseases in America but instead of there being policies to educate people on how to loose weight and undertake self-effacing exercises, which are more powerful tools of prevention, less than a fraction of the citizens suffering from diabetes receive this education. The text further explains that the Obama healthcare plan possibly will change this but we have to wait and see. The solution to these problems is simple. The theory of protagonism best explains this scenario. The United State can achieve tremendous gains in health when multiple social issues encompassing health care are addressed. For example local communities can be encouraged to train health care educationalists at the expense of the savings that will be realized with reduced health care spending. It has been argued that from such an approach close to 20 million of the United States’ 80 million or so pre-diabetics will have received proven deterrent education. The broken relationship between healthcare and social issues has been recognized as the reason why even the best policy will never work effectively if the two are not integrated together.

Currently employers in reply to the growing cost of health care by shifting the additional cost to their workers like through co-pays which are due when treatment is sought after. This has created health care refugees who are left at the mercy of their employers. Bearing in mind the previous and the current health care situation in America, I can concur with Chris Norwood critic that, a health system can cripple a country especially where the policies are geared toward curative services which are much more expensive than the preventive one. It does not need a rocket scientist to figure out that the billions of dollars being spent by the federal government to provide each American with health care can be cut back and still the health care scheme still realize tangible goals and additional benefits. If social support was provided to the health care sector, massive cut backs would be realized including a motivated and healthy workforce. Majority of the illnesses Americans seek medication for can be prevented by social support services like adoption of healthy nutritional behaviors and moderate exercises like walking. The federal government seems to focus on providing medication at the expense of its citizen. The health insuarance cover provided by many employers cannot cater wholly for the health care needs of their employees. Therefore, if healthcare savings were realized through an integrated health care social support policy, unemployment rate would be lessened as the cuts can be used to finance economic venture as opposed to the current situation where by large businesses are avoiding setting up businesses for the fear of incurring large expenditures on employee health insuarance; hence, realizing a more productive society.
