I work at a park district as a financial assistant. In my portfolio I have my resume which lists the people I have worked for. My first job was with Wells Fargo and I started out working for them in a secretarial position. I was able to accomplish so much in this position that I was permitted to begin working with some basic financial planning. I have a letter of recommendation from my former employer in my portfolio and it is a great recommendation. I also have two letters of recommendation from fellow colleagues in my portfolio and they both concern my ability to be a team player.
One of my colleagues was having a hard time with their work and I was able to assist them. The individual ended up helping the company make a good profit and recommends me highly in the letter. I feel this recommendation will be very useful for those who would like to see what my abilities are and they both show future employers that I am a team oriented worker who has a lot to contribute and help my colleagues even when I do not receive credit for the work. This, I believe, makes me an asset to any company. Both letters are written on company stationery and I have photocopies of them that are very professional looking.
My resume is also done by a professional and I had a cover letter written by a professional company that talks about my enthusiasm for the field I am in and how much I would like to work for any company that I apply to. These documents were done with the utmost professionalism and are on very fine business stationary. The cover letter is designed so I can adjust it to any company that I wish to apply to.
The next documents in my portfolio are from my second job working as a planner for an environmental agency and I was there for several years. I was proud of my work this and this is what got me involved in parks. I am very passionate about the environment and this is stated in my cover letter. As I was at this job for quite some time it shows my ability to stick with projects. There is a letter from a worker at the Environmental Protection Agency that is a recommendation explaining how my work through my former employer assisted the EPA in a situation involving how to pay for adjustments needed in a factory nearby. The EPA was unable to find a financially successful way to resolve the problem and I assisted them and we were able to keep the factory open while not spending excessive amounts of money. This is a strong recommendation in my portfolio and I am proud of the work I did. I believe it is a powerful document to show my skills to all who are interested in possibly working with me. I
Finally I have my current job listed on my resume and a copy of my academic records. As my grades are very high I believe this is useful to have in portfolio. I have unofficial copies of my transcripts so that they are on hand for any future employer who is interested in hiring me or for any special project.
I do have an electronic portfolio. I keep scanned copies of my resume and three letters of recommendation in it as well as a scanned copy of my transcripts. I have used this in order to apply for jobs online and have had a positive response to it. In fact, in my current job I had to apply for the work online and used my electronic portfolio. My employer was impressed with it and called me in for an interview. I then presented hard copies of the portfolio I described above. It must have been impressive to him as I got the job after an interview and am still with the company,
Conclusion/summary
I believe that a resume and cover letter are vital to a portfolio and it is useful to have one done professionally. It does not cost that much to have them made and the writer will work with you to create a spectacular resume and a cover letter that is not just repetition about what is in your resume but is also pertinent to your work and grabs the attention of a possible future employer. It is also important to have good recommendations from colleagues and former employers as these are testimonies to those looking at hiring you that you can do a job and be a team player. Being able to contribute as a team player is a really important quality to most companies. I believe these documents will make my portfolio highly effective and that they will help me when I look for employment in the future. My electronic portfolio already helped me get a good job and I know it will be effective as a tool for employment in the future.
