Traditionally, firms required labor and capital to succeed in their industries. Wealthy businesspersons would combine their capital (land, money, and machinery) with high-quality labor to become the best in their industries. However, this scenario has changed in the contemporary world, with information being the third and arguably the most critical factor. Information drives the modern world. Although information is often considered beneficial for firms, people desire information throughout their lives. People use information in their daily decision-making; it is necessary to decide which routes to use when driving, clothes to wear, shopping time, and books to read. Therefore, many seek to satiate this desire in libraries—unlimited information sources.

I have learned the importance of information throughout my academic and professional experiences. I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Merchandising from Florida State University. My education gave me the necessary academic skills and competencies I required to build my professional skills. First, I learned the value of collaboration to gain more information and skills to ensure progress. Collaboration brings together multiple people’s strengths to forge new ideas and skills. Second, I learned the value of research for continuous development. Continuous improvement is fundamental due to the frequent evolution of the contemporary world as information and technology become more available. Professionals must continuously improve their skills and knowledge to remain competitive.

I have utilized these skills in my career. I have worked in the education sector at the Florida Department of Education Certifications and as a Core Subject Educator. My responsibilities included analyzing students’ academic needs to design effective curriculums and lesson plans. I worked with learners throughout K-12. Furthermore, I have worked as an assistant buyer with Phillips International and a customer service/ inventory management selling association with Tiffany & Co., Christian Dior, and Louis Vuitton. These roles improved my customer service skills, helping me avail relevant information to buyers. As a sales buyer, I analyzed sales data and conducted competitive research to guide customer service decisions related to sales trends. Additionally, I relied on data to inform merchandising and selling decisions in Tiffany & Co., Christian Dior, and Louis Vuitton.

A Master of Science in Information will help me build on this foundation to develop my career. My career path is in general librarianship. I plan to improve my knowledge of information, mainly collecting, analyzing, and implementing data insights, in building a career as a librarian. I have developed supportive professional skills in education and customer service. Thus, I want to gain the necessary knowledge and strategies to build on these skills to help people in their quest for information in libraries. Moreover, I want to learn the strategies to combine interdisciplinary data in my analyses and decisions. These skills will guide me in being an effective librarian who values the role of information throughout people’s professional, academic, and social lives.

I will also contribute to the program and the entire schooling community. I will work with my peers and professors on projects and research to expand my knowledge base on the role of information. Furthermore, I will collaborate with my peers to brainstorm how to gain more from the program to develop our careers. Finally, I will adhere to the school’s principles and contribute to the community by engaging in extra-curricular activities that enhance the community’s welfare.
