Chavin de Huanter, Article Review Example

A literature review of the article Chavin de Huanter and Its Sphere of Influence by Richard L. Burger, published in 2008, indicates that Chavin de Huanter is one of the most influential archeological sites in the region of Peru. The site gives archeologists a close glimpse into the life and culture of the pre-Hispanic Andes – one of the many native tribes that once occupied Northwestern South America in what is now modern-day Peru. The Chavin de Huanter is such an important archeological site because it has so much to tell about the native people of that region. For over a century, archeologists have been researching and excavating the Chavin de Huanter in order to learn more about the people, the culture, and the outstanding architecture of a very intelligent native race.

The Andes were a very religious people and the land in which they occupied had sufficient enough resources to gain them wealth and good-standing within the broader community. They were not primarily warriors and most likely only fought for self-defense, rather than conquest. As with most human civilizations, there were various classes of people. The wealthier members of the community had access to tenderer, younger meat from the llamas as well as gold jewelry, decorated utensils, and other indicators of wealth. The natives were also very successful in trading with other local tribes, as evidenced by the artifacts that have been found at the center with origins from 100 miles away or even further.

The author’s argument is very convincing. Burger begins his article by directing attention to the fact that Chavin de Huanter has had – and still has, a great deal of influence on archeological research in Peru. He even details the history of the center, starting from its initial discovery in 1553 by Pedro Sieza de Leon and ending with Kembal and Rick’s research program in the mid-to-late 90s.  He then continues to describe how the center was of religious importance to the native people. Burger construes the life of the Andes in great detail, using the archeological discoveries that were found at the site as evidence. For example, he notes that over 100 human bones were discovered at the site with cut-marks on them – suggesting that the native people could have partaken in ritual cannibalism. One of Burger’s strengths is his exceptional style of referencing. He carefully references almost all of his statements to make sure that they are supported by documented evidence. Something that could be interpreted as a weakness, depending on what perspective one uses, is that Burger’s use of language is a bit dry and it is difficult to maintain interest in the story that he is telling. Overall though, he does an exceptional job of explaining the significance of Chavin de Huanter.
