Introduction: Children of Men science fiction movie made popular in 2006. Alfonso Cuarón is the co-writer director of the film. The screenplay was adopted from Mr. P.D James novel carrying the same name. The time of this film is 2027 when due to twenty years of infertility the human species is at its brink of extinction and society is about to disintegrate. At the same time illegal immigrants invade the United Kingdom as refugees and the government passes restrictions to limit the influx. The role of civil servant is played by Owen. This is the character Theo Faron, who facilitates the entry of refugee, Clare-Hope Ashitey relieving the current pressures imposed on new refugees coming into the country. Also starring in this movie are Charlie Hunnam, Julianne Moore, Michael Caine and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Bennett).
Body/plot: In this interesting captivating plot the writer director allows a situation of global infertility stretching for over 18 -20 solid years to occur. Human civilization and life becomes almost . United Kingdom is allowed to be the only nation on earth, which still demonstrates some degree of stability in its function especially by being able to sustain a government structure. Consequently, asylum seekers, known as refuges rushed in from their chaotic territories towards safety in United Kingdom. This country was not happy in accepting them. In their efforts to control the influx of these unwelcomed guests United Kingdom adopts a military political attitude towards all refugees entering the country (Bennett).
These unwelcomed guests classified as illegal immigrants arre captured by police and detained. The play seems to attain its climax when a character in the nature of someone who was an activist who became a cynical bureaucrat is captured by the state police immigrants’ rights group. His name was Theo Faron. Interestingly, this group named Fishes is led by Theo’s former wife, Julian Taylor, from whom he was divorced after their son died. The plot escalates when Julian seeks a favor form Theo offering him money for obtaining Kee’s transit papers, a refugee that entered the country recently. The business was successfully transacted when the papers are delivered by Nigel, Theo’s government minister cousin (Bennett).
For these transit papers to be delivered Theo had to agree to accompany Kee in exchange for this huge amount of money. A Fishes member, Luke, drives them along with, Miriam, a midwife to the pickup site. An armed Gang ambushes them and Julian is killed. Two police officers are killed by Luke as they escape. These officers tried to stop them when in route to the site. It turns out that Kee becomes pregnant and delivers a girl baby in the height of this infertility scare. During confrontation between refugees and Britain Theo is shot dies, but Kee escapes with the baby (Bennett).
Conclusion: This can be considered a thrilling movie whereby the beginning, raising action, climax and end kept the audience in suspense. Theo was a very useful and articulate main character. The co-stars could be clearly identified as Julian and Kee who were introduced later in the falling action. Miriam played a minor role of midwife when introduced her purpose was somewhat obscure, but as the action began to fall when Kee became pregnant and had to be delivered under strange circumstances her role became obvious
