Picking the right person to fill in the position of Chief Executive Officer of any business organization is a critical decision that every business board members should give close attention to. It shall determine the process of development that every organization is expected to take into account, especially in facing the different challenges of working thoroughly through all the differing conditions of in the market that the organization is enjoined with. An example of this particular decision could be seen from what has happened to Home Depot and HP. In this discussion, focusing on such matter serves as the focal point of presentation.

Among the issues that have affected the decisions of both HP and Home Depot include the need to pick the right person with the right background to handle the different conditions of operations that that the organization is practically involved with. Practically, the capacity of the individual to take on the duties he is supposed to complete would rely on how much he knows about the field of operation that the business involved with. The experience of each individual would determine the ability he has to bring the organization into better heights of improvement. This has been an evident problem for the board members of HP as they took the option of choosing Meg Whitman as their new CEO. It has been realized that Whitman is not the exact person the company needs especially when it comes to increasing the level of competitive advantage the organization has in the industry.

Home Depot on the other hand took the chance in choosing Craig Menear as the new CEO because of his connection and experience with the company. Considerably, the problem was that the resignation of Frank Blake that was rather uncalled for. This sudden movement by the former CEO prompted Home Depot to check on their current resources, the individuals who worked for them and evaluate the way they handle the different duties in the organization and how efficient they are in responding to challenges.

Considerably, these problems could be resolved in determining the knowledge that the board members have on their people that is established through experience and longtime service to the organization. Relatively, through effectively mandating the course of development of each individual, organizations such as HP and Home Depot could take on the challenge of immediately finding the right individual to take on the position that is as crucial as that of a CEO.
