Analytical listening is when an individual focuses on emotion or feeling and its meaning. Critical listening is when one exams their listening styles to gain a greater understanding of what the other person is saying. Shaggy is an amateur thief trying to make it on the streets. He is running to seek a safe place to hide one night when he seeks shelter at Lucia Maracana’s house. He falls for Bernice, Lucia’s daughter. He listens to Bernice in an analytical way regarding getting out the slums and the life that they are living. Shaggy takes that advice and they highjack a car at gun point. When they get into the car it will not restart. The man says it needs pushed to start up again. This point Bernice tells him to get out and push the car, this is an example where he used critical listening. He knew that he had to hear what she was saying in order to get out of there. The scene ended in shaggy being shot pushing the car. Shaggy shows two different types of listening during his interactions with Bernice.
Context barriers is based on obstacles that divert an individual’s normal direction to alternate means. During normal day of terrorizing the streets, Zé Pequeno comes across some kids who were talking about being like Zé, and one mentions that they want to wipe him out. He enters hearing this begins chasing them down. Catching two he informs them that they are going to pay for the other kid’s actions. He asks them if they want to be shot in the hand or foot. They both hold out their hands, and he shoots them in the foot. The barrier of listening was based on his desire to inflict the most pain. The point of asking was not to hear what they were wanted, but to find ways to control the situation. Zé diverts his normal direction of killing both children for threatening his power by shooting them in the foot.
Conversation narcissism is the pursuit of gratification in an egotistical and vain manner, stemming from pride. Knock out Ned became vain in his pursuit of Zé. He knew that he had the man power to back him up and he began changing his own perspective that he had when he started the war. In a shootout, Otto, a young boy is hit, and Know out Ned begins to yell at him for joining the war. Ned is summoned by Carrot for one of their enemies being hit and he tells the kid he will be back when he is done. The kid shoots him in the back and he dies. The kids purpose for joining the war was till avenge his father. His father was killed by knockout Ned in the bank robbery. Knock out Ned’s egoistical manner for addressing Otto, and the streets ultimately cost him his life.
Self-disclosure is when one individual reveals himself to another person. Mané Galinha, Knock out Ned, is a handsome ladies man who is forced to retaliate due to Zé’s reign of terror. After Zé rapes his girlfriend and kills some of his family, he joins forces with Carrot to get his revenge. The self-disclosure of Knock out Ned was when they were planning to fund the operation and he was seeking a gun. They said they didn’t have an extra one they were going to have to rob a store to get one. He clearly felt that he needed to disclose that he was not a thug and was not going to kill people. However, that changed as their journey progressed. The positive is that he stopped Carrot from killing a person when they were raiding the gun story. The negative is that he had to kill an officer in a bank robbery to save his own life.
