Identity the various HR/workplace/course issues that are depicted in the film
The movie has many different workplace and human resource (HR) issues. The workplace atmosphere is out of control because the office does not have any management control. The employees have to hoard supplies because they will not get supplies once they run out. The company allows segregation of employees that are full time and employees that are temporary. The primary human resource (HR) issues is the treatment of temporary employees which many companies would normally have lawsuits in the real world. The temporary employees are not treated equally as employees but as cast outs. In addition, every problem in the office they accused the temporary as the problem. The temporary employees are fired for nothing even when they do not know the temporary’s name. In the real world, businesses cannot just fire employees for not good reason and treat them unfairly.
Describe a particular incident/issues that you feel is particularly important and relevant to the management
One of the scenes that was considered funny is the new employee named Iris report to work. It was her first day on the job. Iris was told that should sit down in the office in a chair. Iris would was told that the manager would come and get her. Iris sits in that chair for hours without the manager showing up to get her. Several hours later the office manager shows up to get Iris. The managers blames Iris for never notifying him that she was on the premises. The problem with the management is Iris was not informed about the identity of the manager. She should have never found the manager. The manager blames Iris for not finding him or notifying him she arrived. This is a relevant issue about the poor management skills of the managers.
Discuss how the incident/issue is handled in the film and how this impacts the people/organization. The management handle the situation incorrectly blaming the employee for not finding the manager. The employee what left the new temporary Iris in the room along is also responsible for not checking on the new employee. The HR department is equally responsible because they should have greeted Iris on her first day. They should have taken her through some type orientation before introducing Iris to her new manager. This is an example of how the organization operations on a daily basis. The employees do not have any respect for the managers and the business climate in the office. The employees do not get very much done therefore, they do just enough to keep the job.
This type of poor management has turned the staff into clockwatchers. The employees try to avoid management at all cost because they do not want to be fired or subjected to the abuse of the manager. This one incident provides a snapshot of how a business office can be non-productive based on the management team. The leaders of this environment is destroying the business which will eventually lead to the company closing. The management impacts the entire environment because the regular employees have created a division between temporary and regular employees. The reason for the division is management will fire anyone without provocation or reason. The regular employees believe that the temporary employees should be fired before any regular employee is released. The employees believe the company has no loyalty therefore they work as less as possible while watching the clock to go home. The moral of this story is management can dictate the success or failure of a business office. The management team needs to be trained on how to treat all employees the same.
Assess the handling of the incident /issue and explain why it is a good or bad example of what an organization/manager should do. This example of the management blaming employees, firing them without provocation and treating the employees unfairly all show what a manager should not do in a business office. Most employees will emulate what the habits and actions of their managers. If the management if coming to work late and can never be found, the employees will have those same work habits. If the manager, is blaming everyone else for projects not being finished, the employees in turn will never take responsible for their own faults. There are other issues that the managers allow which is the male employees leaving their business cards in the women’s bathroom. Management should make it clear that harassing women is not allowed because it is not ethical and it can open the company to major lawsuits. The manager leaving an employee unattended for several hours in inexcusable. The managers are supposed to set the best example for employees on the first day of work. The human resource department should have greeted the Lisa on the first minutes she arrived at work. The employee are following the bad habits of the managers. They left a new employee unattended in a chair for hours without checking on the new employees.
A manager should always keep up with employees and they must not allow the separation between regular employees and temporary employees. The environment suffers because the employees are allowed to spend long periods away from their desk in the bathroom. This means the managers are not where to be found and they are not managing the employees. It is a bad example to mistreat an employee or fire an employee for no good reason. The makes the employees afraid to say anything about problems in the office. They spend more time running from management to keep their jobs. This is a perfect example of how managers should not run a business office. The human resource department is just as responsible for allowing the managers to alienate the employees. The employees should always be allowed to report managers to the human resources.
