Article Review

Introduction

This article addresses the importance of comorbid illnesses that may have an impact on anorexia nervosa, particularly in children and adolescents (Hughes, 2012). The research study indicates that comorbid conditions are very common in patients with anorexia nervosa and have a significant impact on outcomes, often contributing to setbacks or negative circumstances related to the disease that impact health and wellbeing, particularly for adolescents and children who struggle with the disease (Hughes, 2012).

Analysis

Children and adolescents with anorexia nervosa face many challenging circumstances, including medical and psychiatric complications, including anxiety and depression (Hughes, 2012). Therefore, it is necessary to address the evidence that exists in regards to these comorbidities in order to determine their impact on the treatment of anorexia nervosa (Hughes, 2012). The research study is clear and concise; however, it does not cover all possible concepts related to comorbidities related to anorexia nervosa. Furthermore, the study indicates that there is a greater risk associated with managing this disease if other complications are present, thereby indicating a strong need to improve patient diagnoses and treatment in the practice setting (Hughes, 2012).

Conclusion

From a nursing perspective, the diagnosis and treatment of anorexia nervosa may be complicated by specific comorbidities; however, additional evidence in this area is necessary to evaluate this concern in children and adolescent patients (Hughes, 2012). The study indicates that family-based treatment (FBT) is most effective in adolescents, accompanied by strong parental support to improve treatment outcomes (Hughes, 2012). From a quality improvement perspective, it is necessary to evaluate the quality of the studies that are observed so that the evidence is utilized appropriately in clinical settings. However, researchers would synthesize the evidence in order to determine its impact on patients and how it might contribute to the improvement of outcomes for the target population.
