Article Critique

Purpose

The article is about constructivism in mathematics education. It aims to show the characteristics of constructivism.

Why was it written?

The article is written to define constructivism in mathematics and education. The author aims to show support of what constructivists are trying to accomplish. He discusses the strengths and weaknesses in their position. This is because constructivism is considered a controversy in mathematics education. The author tries to break down different aspects of constructivism, not just found in mathematics education, but also in developmental psychology, theories of family, human sexuality, computer technology and even in the psychology of gender. The author does this by providing background on constructivism.

Argument Support

The author argues that constructivism holds epistemological weaknesses, yet it has strengths in its pedagogical view. He believes that constructivism should be viewed in a cognitive position and a methodological perspective. This way, it will prove to be a powerful tool in helping the educational system learn about mathematical learning in order to develop strategies and to reflect on school teaching. He supports this argument with an example of a teacher’s constructivist thinking. This is when the teacher concentrates on the central problem of getting his or her students to think outside the box, this is seen in his noticing that students are not following instructions on test papers. This results in the teacher removing points for not following instructions, however, a more positive way of grading can be approached. The school day after the tests are marked, he will let the students know that he will give incentives for students to submit pictures, charts, formulas, statements, etc. The grades on their papers will then increase,

Advantages/Disadvantages

  • There needs to be a great deal of research to be done in the area
  • The study follows numerous criticisms
  • Grading positively may pose a negative effect on the students’ willingness to learn; i.e. laziness
  • The study needs more analysis and elaboration
