Bill Introduction:

Senate Bill 132 / S.L. 2013-307 Introduced February 25, 2013. Sponsored by Warren Daniel, Jerry W. Tillman, Shirley B. Randleman, Austin M. Allran, Andrew C. Brock, and Ralph Hise.

Historical Perspective:

This bill is a response to restrict abortion rights for the women of North Carolina. It attempts to educate students regarding the risks of abortion and their impact on future preterm births (Planned Parenthood, 2014).

Summary of Bill:

This bill attempts to convey the belief that abortions are a precursor for future pre-term births by educating students in NC schools, even though this is not a proven medical fact in any reputable organization or publication (Planned Parenthood, 2014).

Healthcare Policy Addressed:

This Bill addresses the continued issues regarding abortion rights that are common throughout the United States. Many states have sought to establish regulations that are designed to restrict abortions, many for religious and ethical reasons.

Significant Facts:

This bill was introduced on February 25, 2013 and was passed by the Senate on July 3, 2013.  It was given to the governor on July 10, 2013.

Fiscal Impact:

This bill provides false education to young and impressionable students. This bill restricts women’s rights and does not provide the truth regarding the after effects of abortion. It is not likely to deter many women who seek abortions, and they will continue to do so at their own discretion.

Personal Perspective:

I chose this bill because women’s rights should not be infringed upon by the state government. Women should have the right to choose what they want to do with their bodies and whether or not they want to have abortions. Education regarding abortion should also not be untruthful; it should be based upon factual evidence and not myth. The medical dangers of abortion and its risk on future births is not typically a significant issue and should not be expressed as fact in schools.
