Cultural Psychology: Culture and Change, Article Review Example

One of the issues on culture that is currently under immense discussion in the media is the issue of the erosion of common culture when it comes to cultural elements such as music, art and films. The New York Times reveals that most people are becoming attracted to different types of music and arts unlike the old days when many people in the society would share or subscribe to a common music genre or art. The tremendous change as observed in this condition is attributed to the technological advancement. The media reveals that technology is constantly killing the common culture as people get exposed to things from different regions around the world.

Variables of technology as digitization and internet have played a greater role in eroding the common culture, for instance, people from one tribe, race, or gender can subscribe to different tastes of music and art. Studies show that people in different regions who had been observed to subscribe to common taste of music or art have changed their tastes as they get exposed to the global village through the internet, this explains the role of motivation in culture. In the contemporary society, an American can develop special preference towards Italian music or A Briton can develop a special liking towards an African music or art (Steven, Heine, p 578).

Relating the above observation to the issue of cultural psychology it is therefore evident that culture is one of the elements that are subject to change. Change affects the culture and in the society and enables individuals to cultivate distinct identity from their original identity. It is through change that individuals in the society are able to propagate new identities and behavior in their respective cultures.
