Article Review

People with mental and physical health problems definitely are not recession proof in 2013. Unemployment filings soared for the people with any mental health disorders.

King’s College London performed some research on people that had mental health disorders and they found that men and those with a lower level of education had greater gaps with the employment percentage rates.

The King’s College London researchers studied data from 27 countries in European Union. The data was collected from 20,000 individuals in the year of 2006 and then followed up in the year of 2010 with the same 20,000 individuals. The studies performed several assessments on socio-demographic information, mental health, and stigmatizing attitudes using the Euro barometer survey.

The clinical correspondence concluded that there was a 5.5% increase for individuals with mental health disorders versus the 2.7% of individuals without the mental health disorders.

The European economic recession had a huge impact all across Europe. There was hardly any information on any one type of specific group, especially with people that were already susceptible to social exclusion and/or mental disorders.

Through research analysis, the study found that the men and the groups of individuals with lower education levels were more likely to not have a job after the European economic crisis.

These types of mental health disorders can also affect a person’s physical well-being and health and how society perceives the individuals with this type of handicap.

Bipolar mental disorders are found in 4% of the American population. Bipolar disorders are considered a serious medical disorder and this mental disease causes severe mood swings. The medical statistics show that 10% of people with a bipolar disorder are also binge eaters.

People with a bipolar disorder plus excessive binge eating are always more likely to develop other mental health disorders. Some examples may include:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Substance abuse
  • Psychosis
  • Anxiety disorders

People that are obese and have a bipolar mental disorder but are not actually guilty of binge eating may develop these physical problems such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure

Women are more likely to develop a bipolar disorder with a binge eating problem more so than their male counterparts. This study was recently published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.

These mental disorders with these types of physical health ailments are much more complex. These medical diagnoses are difficult to treat on a case by case basis.

People with the mental disorders of being bipolar plus binge eaters represent a group of individuals that are more medically ill than a normal bipolar person and also people with these types of handicaps have a very difficult time remaining employed.

These individuals identified in this unique subgroup of patients may be able to help the medical community develop more personalized and effective mental and physical treatments in the future and also help society debut this medically ill people in a very different employment light.
