Darth Vader’s role as the head of the Empire would benefit from a reassessment of the organizational structure currently in place. Since the true head of the Empire does not actively control daily operations, it is necessary for Darth Vader to determine how to organize the structure of the organization. There are many operations that are under the direct control of Darth Vader and it would be beneficial for him to elect managers and supervisors to be in direct control of the storm troopers and other organization members that carry out these responsibilities. Specifically, it appears that there is a need for a party to be responsible for conducting political negotiations to maintain trade or to gain control of neighboring planets, an individual should be put in control of establishing an organized defense team against the rebellion, and it is necessary for an individual to be responsible for a team that could reasonably procure funds to enable ongoing operations.

While it appears that Vader’s current personnel may lack the leadership ability necessary to serve as heads of these teams, it would be reasonable for Vader to attract the attention of other young talented individuals in the universe. Vader’s plan to recruit Luke Skywalker to the team is therefore a reasonable response to the needs of the organization. However it essential for Vader to first determine whether Luke Skywalker’s professional goals are in alignment with the objectives of the Empire. Once this is assessed and confirmed, it would be reasonable for Darth Vader to begin training Luke Skywalker to take over one of the necessary leadership posts. Ideally, Luke Skywalker would be placed in charge of forming negotiations with other planets or maintaining control over them. Since several different leaders are needed, it would be beneficial for Vader to enter negotiations with Boba Fett, the natural son of Jango Fett, who was the prototype used to create the Stormtrooper clones. Since Boba Fett is a powerful bounty hunter, it would be reasonable to permanently recruit him to serve the Empire as the leader of defense. To fulfill the leadership needs of the procurement department, it would be beneficial for Darth Vader to ask interested members of the crew to submit resumes and cover letters detailing their fit for the position. He should then select the most qualified and trainable individual to serve this position.

Once leaders for each team are selected, Darth Vader should work closely with them to develop training programs for their staff and to determine goals that each team should work towards to help meet the overall goals of the Empire. Doing so will allow each employee to become more certain of their individual goals and roles within the organization. Since Darth Vader was previously responsible for the management of the entire Empire, creating a chain of command will allow for a greater extent of oversight and help provide the employees with direction. In turn, this should create better work efficiency because managers will be asked to not only set goals for them, but act as leaders and help them understand the steps that are necessary to achieve such goals. Doing so will positively contribute to the well-being of the organization. To further refine the structure of the organization, the team leaders will be asked to select lower level managers to supervise specific objectives for the team. The role of the team leader will therefore be to ensure that the lower level managers are delegating responsibilities and have the resources necessary to help employees. Meanwhile, Darth Vader will be in direct control of these team leaders, making sure that oversight of the Empire becomes a simpler task.

In order for Darth Vader’s leadership potential to be maximized, it is important for him to implement clear consequences for breaches of instruction in addition to incentive procedures to motivate employees. Previously, Darth Vader implemented a punishment only policy that occasionally resulted in death. Now however, it is important for Vader to ensure that he is able to improve employee productivity. One manner of doing so is by enabling employees to understand that good work will be rewarded with positive recognition and by the ability to move up through the chain of management. Good workers could eventually be promoted to managers, and then to team managers if the need becomes available. Furthermore, once budget problems are resolved, it would be reasonable for Darth Vader to award employees with bonuses and raises.

Last, it is important to consider that Darth Vader should implement transformational leadership in his management practices. Since many employees are currently unaware of what to do or how to do it, this leadership style can support their professional development in a manner that will allow them to perform as better members of the team, which feeds back to the success of the Empire. Thus, it is also beneficial for Darth Vader to promote the use of this leadership style among his managers to make sure that employees are able to work productively and with meaning.
