Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder being described as a nutritional disease. It is considered an urban health issue because more people residing in cites seem to be affected by the dysfunction. There are two categories of diabetes mellitus being classified type 1 insulin dependent and type 11 non-insulindependent. Type 1 seems to be more severe occurring in children, adolescents and young adults. These patients’ pancreas produces insulin that cannot convert sugar into glucose. Consequently, they depend on being supplied synthetic insulin for sugar metabolism. In type 11 diabetes patients’ pancreas make insufficient insulin for breaking down carbohydrate glucose. As such, oral medication is taken in stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin. When there is no insulin or insufficient blood glucose levela rsie above normal becoming detrimental to the body.

My interest in this condition, especially, type 11 diabetes has emerged from the understanding that type 11 diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in urban communities. More so, more children are being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in developed nations over the past decade. Besides the dietarypredisposition attached to the condition scientist havenot been able to clarify a distinct etiology for the insulin insufficiency or impotence occurring in diabetes.

As such, it is hoped that by embarking on a research project investigating diabetes mellitus more insights into causes could be revealed. At the moment it could be assumed that while insulin is the common factor in both categories there could be significant difference in etiological elements. Also there is no known scientific cure for diabetes as there is none for cancer. This is so because no one has identified distinct causes.
