Differentiation: Lessons for Master Teachers, Article Review Example

Pages: 1

Words: 322

Article Review

Differentiated instruction seems an interesting idea in theory but only successful practical examples of differentiated instruction will encourage the widespread implementation of the concept. Some master differentiators have subconsciously employed differentiated instruction methods over their career. It’s a coincidence that most of the effective teaching methods discovered by master differentiators come are also part of the differentiated instruction.

Master differentiators didn’t employ different teaching tools to accommodate students with different abilities and learning styles just for the sake of diversity promotion but instead saw huge advantages in doing so. They were also compassionate towards the students and acknowledged their unique abilities as strengths rather than hurdles. Their teaching methods could be compared with specialization of labor where students were often given tasks that best matched their abilities. These master differentiators may serve as mentors for the next generation of teachers. In addition, other training tools such as case studies, group discussions, and practice sessions can also be utilized to improve teachers’ differentiated instruction skills (Carolan & Guinn, February 2007).

Reflection

The theory of differentiated instruction appeals to logic but the task of implementing it also appears to be huge. Teaching profession already suffers from poor morale due to low wages and overworked teachers which is a discouraging sign for the widespread acceptance of differentiated instruction. Actions speak louder than words which is why few examples of successful implementation of differentiated instruction will go a long way towards promoting the theory. The compensation of the teachers will also need to be raised to recognize the extra efforts they will be putting into the classrooms.

More research should be carried out to further broaden the concept of differentiated instruction and promote the concept. The theory is an effective answer to the increasing social awareness where diversity is being appreciated and students with different abilities are being recognized for their unique contributions to the learning environment.
