Does eating healthy control blood sugar levels in diabetics to the extent that medication is no longer necessary? Many people diagnosed with type 11 diabetes would love knowing that it is possible to eat a healthy meal and blood sugar levels are reduced. Taking daily medication seems not as enjoyable as eating foods that produce the same effect. Alternatives to insulin injections and oral anti-diabetic agents are very important today in a society where 285 million people are affected by the disease. However, it is heartening to know that with proper diet and exercise taking insulin and oral anti-diabetic medications can become optional.

Scientists have discovered that by adding functional herbalfoods to the dailyroutineof nutrients’intake can remarkably reduce the need for insulin or anti-diabetic agents in persons diagnosed with type 11 diabetes. For example, eating 2-3 grapes daily helps reduce blood sugar levels by 4grms. Aloe vera juice is another recommended food source that enhances blood glucose absorption to control the amount of sugar circulating in the blood stream. In drinking an 8ounce glass daily could replace the need for one oral diabetic pill (Vuksan & Sievenpipera, 2005).

Other foods which have been researched and proven very effective sources of natural insulin or pancreatic stimulants are bitter gourd, amla and cinnamon. Bitter gourd/melon is a vegetable that contains plant insulin. During digestion this insulin is converted into chemicals capable of storing sugar in the body removing excess glucose from the blood circulation. Amla is a fruit of the Indian gooseberry species. Nutritionists have discovered that outcomes are best when used in combination with bitter gourd after seeds are removed and the fruit is crushed. Cinnamon is a spice, which is added to food as a condiment (Maggie, 2001).

My interpretation regarding the author’s review of functional herbal food ingredients used in type 2 diabetes mellitus relates to the deliberate attempts at producing scientific evidence proving that these foods do have medicinal value. Research was cited to support that eating healthy foods type 11 diabetes can be eliminated entirely as a disease. When pancreatic dysfunctions occur these could be easily reversed without the use of drugs, which cause adverse side effects. Eating appropriate functional foods is essential to reversing high blood sugar levels and its effects (Perera& Li, 2012).

This article presents a very useful health promotion strategy for persons who are not insulin dependent diabetics and whose blood sugar  levels could be controlled with diet. Some persons are resistant to drinking pills. Self-administration of insulin could become an obstacle to blood glucose management. Hence, management through improved nutritional practices is always most beneficial. However, since society has become medicine oriented, people will have to be educated regarding the usefulness of functional foods. In the same way this information is new to me the American public may not be aware that these foods exist and where they could be purchased.

Therefore, in concluding this discussion, it must be understood that while the article,‘functional herbal food ingredients usedin type 2 diabetes mellitus’has made an impact on me and data collected provided scientific basis for intervention strategies; dissemination of the information is necessary. Importantly, it makes a great journal publication, but likewise  must be offered as  a vital aspect in evidence based practice of type 11 diabetic nutrition education
