Abstract
In this assignment, I will first read and understand the document on dual relationship between therapist and clients. This is a national study of Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and Social workers. In reviewing the quantitative research, elaborates how well the research was done, and if it covered all the respondents affected by the current circumstance. I will also look at the sample selection, was it done well, did it consider gender and current relationships. I will confirm if the problem statement was to be promptly introduced, and well defined and the purpose of the research.I will consider the review of the literature, research design and the sampling process. Most importantly are the data collection and the quantitative analysis.
Introduction
The research was to be conducted on 4,800 psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers, which ascertains ethical beliefs on the sexual dual relationships between psychologists/psychotherapists and their clients. They were to report the degree to which they find the behavior unethical or how often they engage in the behavior. The research had 3 crucial aspects; these are the five national studies on dual relationship, information about the belief and behaviors of sexual dual relationship and lastly the many studies carried out over a decade ago.
Sampling
On the research, the sample selection of 800 male and 800 females selected randomly from the 3 significant mental health professional organizations. The target population had been carefully described; their ages, gender, professionalism, region of residence and marital status, all had been indicated. In sample selection, the procedure was clear they had to select from the current membership directorate; have completed the training and currently practicing within the past 5 years. The sample size is inadequate taking into consideration the research to be done. The field has many officers, and the 49 % response rate was not suitable for research, we needed to get a 60% and above for a well done research; out of 4,800 only 2,133 respondents were to be well done thus lowering the percentage.
Data collection
Two forms were to be usedas instruments used for data collection; these were the Ethics form and the Practices form. Each had behavior lists that may be dual relationships or may cause a relationship between a therapist and a client. In the ethics form, it had a scale of 5-1 with always ethical and never ethical respectively, the degree to which the behavior is to be considered ethical was to be indicated. The second form, practices with a scale of 5= all clients and 1=no clients, this was, for the respondents, to indicate the number of clients they have had a relationship. The respondents were to be issued with all they require to answer the questions and send them back. They were to be given a cover letter, survey form, stamped and addressed return envelop and lastly a post card for the results summary.
Analysis
In the analysis factor, ethical rating on the relationship between the therapist and the clients conceptualize two factors; that is Incidental involvement and the Social/Financial involvement. Incidental accounted to 69.8% while Social/Financial involvement accounted 17%. On the post hocanalysis, it shows that psychologists view incidental involvementmore ethical compared to social workers. On the Planned contrasts “demonstrated that male respondents who accounted a predominately female client population viewed such involvement as significantly more ethical than respondent in all therapist –client gender pairing”. This research was clear in indicating the degree of ethics considering the gender and profession of the respondent.
On the social/financial involvement, the rating showed that the female therapist views such involvement as less ethical as compared to their male counterpart. This rating was to be detailed, with research design and question fit for the method of analysis. On the practices rating, the incidental involvement indicated that psychologist reported having engaged with their clients more than other two professional and on gender consideration more female therapist got involved than the male therapist.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the research was to be well done, and with a natural flow from the conceptual framework, the human rights were to be protected by letting them answer personal question with a reason for requiting the information being to be explained in the introduction. The results wereto be explained though some complexity wasexperienced, in which one some expertise to understand. The research assumed that, all the participants understood the current problem because they all work in the affected filed.
