Altieri, J. (2008). Behavioral Issues, Self-Esteem Struggles, Retention, and More: The Portrayal of Book Characters with Dyslexia. The Cidatel School of Education.
Altieri L. Jennifer, a Tenured Professor at the Cidatel School of Education and author of several books and journals did a research on adolescent and children’s trade books that showed school-age characters with Dyslexia. This study examined 72 books published in the United States between 1993 to 2003. Other parameters examined by this study include self-esteem problems, behavioral characteristics, grade retention, as well as history of dyslexia amongst family members. The researchers used two websites, three internet bookstores, and consulted media specialists. Their findings showed that 55 female and 17 male characters had dyslexia. It also emerged that 50% of the characters had behavioral problems, while 27% of them reported family members with dyslexia characters. The researcher recommended use of other genres for future researchers as she used contemporary realistic fiction (Altieri, 2008). Though she does not base her research on an a past one, she limited herself to United States of America hence advice future researchers on the same to check on other continents as well as research on autobiographies of both children and adults.
The authenticity of this study can be disputed because secondary sources of fictional stories on dyslexia adults and children only give people a glimpse of virtual reality. The good thing though in this research is the laying of a platform for future studies to be carried out using well-defined genres.
Lindstrom, W, Coleman, C, Thomassin, K, Southall, M, & Lindstrom, J. (2010). Simulated Dyslexia in Postsecondary Students: Description and Detection Using Embedded Validity Indicators. Journal of clinical neuropsychologist.Vol. 25 (2), p.302-322.
This research, the first independent study on simulation of dyslexia by postsecondary students took place after authorization by the Institutional review board of the researchers’ university in accordance with the set principles. Seventy-five adults, forty-five female ages averaging approximately twenty participated, in the southeastern United States. They all came from mid- to- large size colleges and universities. This research seeks to analyze and understand performances of simulators on a battery of measures used in evaluation for potential dyslexia. The researches strive to identify characteristics used to discriminate simulator-testing profiles from dyslexia and to develop discriminating index for identifying symptom exaggeration in students who want to seek academic favors because of difficulty in reading and spelling (Lindstrom et al, 2010, p.314). In the research, non-clinical samples completed tasks in the individual examination sessions lasting 120, completing forms and questionnaire. In two-day evaluations, dyslexia group data was collected at the center. The researchers enacted several measures to reduce invalidity before conducting multivariate analysis. This indicates the strengths of arguments of the researchers because of use of clinical samples and selective use of samples from the population of interest to researchers.

Eight university professionals from Malaysia carried out a research on the prevalence rate of dyslexia, a condition that affects the learning process of student. Dyslexia they concluded affect reading, writing and even spelling capability of a student. This condition, they found out affect the moral strength of a student, they get negative attitudes towards themselves, feelings of low self-esteem and confusion, fear of failure and ridicule from their fellow colleagues (Hoon Ong et al, 2010). The research found out; students who suffer from these conditions are extraordinarily smart and creative.
In this research, the researchers drew 10 Malaysian universities with regard to their private and public status amounting to a third of the total number of universities in that country. The results and conclusions arrived at by these researchers are a true reflection of the problems experienced by dyslexia across Malaysia. The authenticity of the research is based on the use of primary sources for research. This gives a challenge to future researchers to try and find more on the challenges faced by dyslexia, especially those students who cut or copy paste materials from the internet.
Literature review outline
In all the three studies carried out, the researchers have expressed their thoughts of letting others continue with more research on the same matter. They have given more avenues for carrying out more research on areas that are untapped. For instance, the study case of simulated dyslexia in postsecondary students has laid grounds for future investigations on variables such as ethnicity and age. The study by Jennifer Altieri makes recommendations for future studies. She indicates the need to examine other genres like how dyslexia is portrayed in autobiographies. She mentions the importance of credible research to continue in examining the portrayal of dyslexia in literature accessible to children.
Although different methodologies were applied in carrying out this research, all have exhibited a common goal in identifying those who suffer from dyslexia. The study cases highlighted here sheds light intensively and extensively on dyslexia. For instance, the second case focuses on a student who simulates this problem in order to gain academic favors unlike those in Malaysia who experience real problems caused by dyslexia (Abang et al, 2006).
Even though this research yielded the desired results, I still feel there is still more to do. For instance, we do not know how people with disabilities experience or go through the same, how age affects the impact of dyslexia and whether one is born with this condition or not. These are gaps that need to be filled by research, and I believe more research on the same is needed to give more perspective on dyslexia that few people certainly know about it.
The depth of the literature leaves a lot to desire in terms of the scope of the study. Although the three researches dealt with the matter at hand, majority still expect them to further research on what has not been touched before. It is important to note that the depth of this research enhances my understanding of pertinent issues regarding dyslexia. Offering moral support can help people suffering from dyslexia lead normal lives.
