Movie Review

“Earth From Space” is a documentary film directed by Iain Riddick and debuted on PBS NOVA series in 2012.  It was posted on Youtube by Marie Fields on May 31, 2015 and entitled, “Weather of the world”. In the movie, “Earth From Space”, Nova poses a direct question to viewers. The narrator ask, how can an environmental occurrence in one part of the world affect weather and climate patterns in another area that is thousands of miles away?   In the documentary, this perplexing weather question is answered by NASA scientist using radiation waves from satellites to detect small environmental changes in temperature, ocean currents, and even land masses. Environmental changes in one area affect another area because several things happen. First of all, the answer is in the rotation pattern of wind and ocean currents. Data collected from the network of satellites above the earth tell scientists that many different winds and water rotating in different patterns in the oceans and around land masses, operate as one complete entity. This entity, of sun, land, air, and water work together to form a continuous cycle. Cold ocean currents flow to meet warmer currents near the equator.  As a result, storms are formed that release tremendous amounts of precipitation in areas like the Amazon. According to the video, the second thing that plays a significant role in weather conditions is the continent of Antarctica. The ocean water surrounding Antarctica continuously releases salty brine, which then flows toward the equator and later returns back to Antarctica. This continuous cycle is responsible for distributing heat around the planet.  The third contributing factor to weather changes, is from forces inside the earth. The documentary describes how molten rock and ocean water combine to produce sulfur and iron. These minerals are transformed in the ecosystem and released as phosphates in the rain forests.  A fourth contributing factor to weather changes occur from earth’s exposure to radiation waves from the sun. These waves are directed toward the poles by earth’s atmosphere as a mean to minimize damage from exposure. The final, and perhaps most influential weather changing factor, according to the video, comes from humanity itself. Humans make a conscious decision to increase manufacturing, transportation, and the number of cities. This in turn, increases greenhouse gases, which melts Artic ice and collapse Antarctic shelves, causing even more weather occurrences.

The earth’s ecosystem is a precious resource from which all life is born. Rainfall provide nitrates and phosphates our bodies need to thrive. Phytoplankton and plants absorb carbon dioxide and release life sustaining oxygen. The sun provides energy for plants to grow. Humans make a significant change in the weather from the lifestyles we live. We have a great need for industry and manufacturing and as a result, release vast amounts of pollution into the atmosphere. In order to maintain our precious earth’s ecosystem, we must become more conscious about the damage we as humans are doing. Our best weapon against the devastating greenhouse effect is not being afraid to discuss and brainstorm on ways we can reduce it.
