Movie Review

The organization culture (civilization) acted to constrained the characters in the film in a variety of ways. Human life in the portrayed civilization is threatened by the specter of an all-out war with a technologically-advanced species known as the buggers. As a result, the denizens lack the ability to practice their religion freely, and government spying and surveillance is ubiquitous and extensive, as they keep watch over young children’s private lives. In addition, the International Fleet forces children to leave their homes and private lives to serve the civilization as soldiers prior to beginning school. Ender Wiggin developed out of this society, and he rises up as a leader who advocates for future generations of youths. This movie showcases what transformational leadership looks like, even in a stringent and rigid civilization where denizens must be constrained in every way possible vis-a-vis constant, state-sponsored manipulation.

In the film, the socialization process in this world is geared towards producing great soldiers, as the primary social system outlined is in the framework of the military. Ender Wiggins emerges as the savior of planet Earth from the buggers, and his journey conveys the socialization process within this particular civilization. At the age of six, Ender transitions into young adulthood, although by the end of the film he is fully transitioned into adulthood. The film traces his navigation of the various stages of socialization as the world around Enders becomes characterized by chaos and war. As such, Enders has more responsibility yet faces increased competition as the socialization process progresses. The International Military presents Enders with a circumscribed and predetermined life rife with certain opportunities, perceptions, and beliefs. Within this world, there is a sense of immense danger posed by a common enemy, the alien race of insect-like creatures. As a result, a sense of community is fomented, and there is a need for human civilization to act as a homogenous social entity. In the film, Enders enters the world of the International Military in which he and the other youths are introduced to the roles and values of soldiers in this apocalyptic world. The production of good soldiers and winning the war against humans are what children are socialized to believe in, and Enders feels responsible to save the human race through violent means.
