Personal Statement

Regarding the issue why I have decided to pursue an opportunity to serve in the commissioned corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, I must admit that I always used to be concerned about health problems of people. The thing is that the modern-day world is characterized by an overwhelming number of factors, which are likely to negatively impact people’s state of health. It is worth saying that among the most harmful determinants, one should emphasize the environmental catastrophe. Obviously, one cannot but encounter the fact that the environmental health emerges to be the matter of great importance from the perspective of reducing the variety of environmentally-related diseases. Considering today’s level of environmental pollution, it is necessary to draw special attention to raising people’s awareness in terms of the need to resist the deterioration of Earth’s health; disregarding these measures is likely to result in a massive disease associated with numerous kinds of environmental pollution.

The curious thing is that despite thousands of tons of pollutants, discharged into the air as well as the ground water every day, only few of the local officials complain; in order to understand such an attitude towards local contamination of the region, it is necessary to take into account the fact that for most of the representatives of local authorities the environmental contamination appears to be a good opportunity to make an extra money. As a result, I am deeply convinced that serving in the commissioned corps of the U.S. Public Health Service is a great opportunity to change our world in the way of its ecological component.

Among the four commissioned corps core values, I would like to make mention that leadership appears to be most meaningful to me. The point is that this very core value elucidates the importance of having self-belief, which makes people the confident decision-makers. Moreover, all the leaders are very conscious and responsible people and they always pay the particular attention to every manager. If every manager feels this, the learning organization will strive to pursue important organizational goals with the help of strong desire for self-perfection of every employee. Due to the fact that they are very persuasive and intelligent, they are usually noticed to effectively use body language and verbal language. This turns them into powerful vehicles, improving team performance. Apart from that, charismatic leaders always lead the team. Being aimed at building specialized groups, the charismatic leader will always focus precisely on making such groups distinct and clear. If such attitude is applied, then the group is supposed to have its own image. One more positive point about leadership in learning organization is that strong leaders usually take into account the minds of other managers and make common decisions. This so-called “leadership sensitivity” is seen to positively contribute to both organizational environment and employees’ needs.

As for the way my professional background and experience have prepared me to serve underserved populations, I must admit that since the early years I paid special attention to how humans affect the environment and the consequences it makes in terms of people’s health; and to be precise, I became aware of direct links between the increased levels of environmental contamination and various diseases that the population collided with. Being concerned about the problems of ecology, I could not but get focused on environmental health; as a result, the willingness to have a master in public health is an adequate outcome of being targeted on researching the environmental issues. My experience within the area of environmental health enabled me to look into the entity of pollution-related illnesses in an absolutely different way. I became aware of the helplessness of population, since in most cases they are simply deprived of an opportunity to influence the policy of the main pollution producers. That is why I am aimed at establishing justice and remove the permissiveness of manufacturing giants, since the lack of restraint is likely to lead the world to a lingering public health catastrophe.
