‘No disease in San Francisco history produced more fear, and more reaction, than smallpox’ (Sewer and Scape Goat, 1940). In my opinion the author was trying to sensitize the public and perhaps the world how devastating smallpox disease was and its impacts on Francisco, United States of America. Even though information saturated history books regarding how many soldiers and people died from smallpox during the outbreak, there seems to be limited data on how it affected this state. It would appear that the author has recognized a gap in the body of knowledge, which ought to be addressed and he/she took the opportunity to do so in this article. More importantly, these authors highlighted the politics, sociology, and cultural impacts of the disease when a vaccine was finally discovered (Sewer and Scape Goat, 1940)

‘Blacks suffered considerably more than whites in the 1860s epidemic’(Sewer and Scape Goat, 1940).This quote intrigued me to the point of asking why is it that blacks have to always suffer more than whites in American history or within the African diaspora. Even today with the HIV/AIDS outbreak African nations such as Botswana are most affected than any other nations. Besides in United States of America today more African Americans are infected in HIV than other ethnic groups. Again more African Americans have hypertension and diabetes than any other ethnic group. It would seem that throughout history it has been portrayed that Africans/blacks seem to have more of every negative feature than any other ethnic group. This needs to be researched thoroughly.
