Evolution, Case Study Example

There have been several studies pertaining to the evolutionary history of man. Some anthropologists viewed socials systems as smaller systems that worked together to form a larger system. By the 1980s, anthropologists had changed their views and saw society from more of a culture and individual standpoint, rather than an overall ‘whole’ piece with smaller parts.

Early anthropology was pretty much dominated by three researchers, Morgan, Tylor and Boas, who spend their lives studying populations and seeking to understand the function and integration of society. Morgan believed in three stages of evolution: savagery, barbarism, and civilization. Tylor based his findings on religion and Boas based his on biology, culture, and linguistics.

Boas actually has more of a modern day theory to his findings. His reasoning for the difference in physical characteristics through the years was basically accounted for due environmental adaptation. Based on the findings of all three men, it seems Boas could fit best within the realm of modern day anthropology and culture.

When attempting to answer the question as to whether you believe these scientists succeeded or failed in their attempts to incorporate their findings into society, it really is a matter of opinion in many ways. Personally, Boas has the most sensible findings and reasons behind what he believes. With his basis being in linguistics as well as biology and culture, it stands to reason there would be more merit than the findings of a scientist who can only base his findings on one thing. Evolution and culture can be united in a broad way if one considers linking things such as Boas did, like linguistics and biology, and the adaptation of a species in order to survive.
