In the second paragraph, the authors write, “There are soup kitchens, community gardens, corner stores and trendy cafes. Yet, many of its low-income residents are food insecure, meaning that they experience difficulty in accessing enough nutritious food through safe and predictable channels.” This quote relates to the main theme of poverty explored in this article. This quote was selected to unravel the economic climate of residents of Downtown Eastside. The authors observe that this area is cropped with food joints such as soup kitchens, corner stores, and community gardens, but the residents are so poor that they cannot afford. Residents experience challenges in finding adequate shelters, food, and healthcare. Other issues surrounding the residents are homelessness, addiction, marginal housing, physical and mental health challenges that affect their economic growth. As a result, solving some of these problems will not only improve on their eating habits, but also empower them economically.

In addition, the authors also write, “Within the micro-sites of the food programs themselves, governance of the poor is enacted through rules, regulations, and line-ups.” This general quotation reflects on social issues in the world today. This intriguing quotation highlights the theme of discrimination and segregation of particular groups in society. In this excerpt, the residents are discriminated on the basis of their gender, ethnicity, disability, age, and sex orientation. Discrimination is an uprising issue in society where certain people cannot enjoy some of rights provided by the national law. For instance, in the United States, some ethnic groups such as Latinos, Africa-Americans, and Jewish communities face criticism when they vie for elective posts. Additionally, some American citizens are still pondering on whether disabled people should be given equal opportunities in public and private sectors.
