We sometimes meet the most unusual people in the most unusual places. During an occasional visit to Boston, I attended a church also frequented by Lee and later we both volunteered at Boston Rescue Mission which assists the homeless population. It was soon apparent to me that Lee’s volunteer activities were motivated by nothing but genuine desire to improve the lives of the least fortunate people in the world. She believes the public sector in most countries including the one in China is long due for economic and political reforms.

I know many people who choose major because of income prospects and because they believe it will help them achieve personal glory, thus, it is always refreshing to come across people who choose a major because it will help the make the most difference in the world. A smart and intelligent individual with strong work ethics like Lee would succeed in any profession yet her career choice has been inspired by selfless desire to serve fellow citizens.

It is sometimes possible to tell how much a person is enthusiastic about his/her profession. Lee often talks about politics, social issues, and economic issues and she often brings up the stark contrast between her own comfortable upbringing and what she witnessed in Xuwen County. She has carefully reflected upon her experiences and is determined to bring change such as closer working relationship between the policymakers in the state governments and frontline social workers. As the current situation stands, lack of communication often results in waste of scarce economic resources and despite spending enormous resources, little changes on the ground, hence, the poverty that characterizes a significant part of China.

Talent and skills are important for success in life but there is no stopping the person from achieving great things when he/she truly believes in the nobility of his/her goals. Nothing is more important to Lee than improving the lives of poor and this is personal to Lee. She has personally witnessed everything and understands how important it is for her to succeed and hopefully inspire fellow Chinese to join her in this mission as well. She knows government in China is too powerful but she also believes one can never underestimate the power of public opinion and her background in advertising should help get her message across effectively and inspire public activism.
