When reading this article, I learned how important the scientific community will be in maintaining information and information technology on the front lines of the climate control crisis. While I realize the importance of scientific research in building prediction models and determining the best solutions for the most likely scenarios, I believed they would be in the role of consultant should a climate control crisis occur.Yet this article points to the efforts already underway through the international body IPCC who already has contributed crucial information in the climate control struggle through the combined efforts of scientists from a number of countries. It was disconcerting however, to realize that even with these successful efforts at joint collaboration, practical behavior change.Their struggle is not the scientific discoveries but in providing information as to the risks of climate change in such a way that people everywhere understand and are motivated to change their behavior in the recommended ways.
A quote that I felt was important in this article was:
Now we have moved from remote possibility of the dangers of one chemical, to firm probability of major threats to the globe arising from our fossil fuel dependent economic systems. Moreover if you look at the fat tails of the major projections of climate change, as Harvard economist, Professor Marty Weitzman has done recently (On Modeling and Interpreting the Economics of Catastrophic Climate Change), you see not a 1 in 10,000 chance of catastrophe, but something like a 1 in 20 chance of 7 degrees Centigrade or more in global warming. A temperature rise on that order would lead to very rapid sea-level rise, mass extinctions, collapse of agriculture, and disruptions of ocean currents and carbon sinks. It is safe to say that almost all senior national and global leaders have not contemplated a response to this kind of scenario in their emergency planning (2-3).
This was a quote that caught my attention because of the clear danger expressed. It seems that climate control has become a normalized threat such that we can discuss it without it seeming real or at least real in our lifetimes. This passage shows how rapidly global warming is worsening to the point that it appears a catastrophe is inevitable resulting in an apocalyptic outcome with the entire earth devastated along with its inhabitants. The passage points out that this isn’t a secret and yet almost no global leader has come up with a response to deal with this inevitability.
After reading this article, II find that I’m wondering about how the population will be handled and approached.I’m a little concerned even though I understand how much climate control is influenced by population growth.Yet there have been efforts in the past to slow population growth that were attempted through questionable means that focused on specific groups. It seems possible that during a time of crisis that may have developed faster than expected due to technological advances, unequal methods of population control may be overlooked and we will have a return to a policy of
The interaction of Government, business and society was extremely evident in this article. The example of Kalemie in the Congo around 1970, which had suffered massive flooding. The train system and tracks had to be raised and people had filled in the first floors of their homes and lived on the second floors. It turned out the river had reversed course, possibly due to climate control, and the local governments had fallen apart and were fighting among themselves. The author suggested that the U.N. would need to head leadership should climate control effect worldwide conditions and work with local governments and businesses to provide local guidance and knowledge about the area. Then these bodies would have to work with those who make up the rest or society to make sure that any efforts instituted would be applicable to the wider population in all areas of daily life.
