Hotel Rwanda, Movie Review Example

The movie Hotel Rwanda (2205) tells the terrible story of the genocide that occurred in Rwanda 11 years ago.  The world observed the brutal murder of some 11 million Tutsi people by Hutu  extremist elements the Western world watched on but did not intervene.  The story focused upon hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina , and his wife, who sheltered more than 1200 Rwandan people.  It is the classic concept of one man who tried to make a difference.  There are marked similarities to this film, Schindler’s list, with the victims of persecution of the Jews.  The film covers, a highly emotive and sensitive subject matter.  Politically, points are made relative to the lack of US involvement, as portrayed by the disgust of a US colonel, as played by Nick Nolte.

The true life story of Paul Rusesabagina is remarkable, as is equally the heroism of his wife.  CNN news reports that Rusesabagina acted as a consultant to the movie ” he saved the lives of 1260 people as he was everything in an uncommon act of courage. (Clinton).  The film take certain liberties with the past, and the world’s people’s indifference to brutality and genocide of the scale” if people see the footage.  They’ll say ‘oh, my God, that’s terrible’ , and they will go on eating their dinners”  (Clinton).

Too a  large extent, the movie Hotel Rwanda represents a fairly good historical account of the events that took place at the time.  It is more a question of factual data that was left  out or excluded, as opposed to any misrepresentation of facts or inaccuracies of the brutality that took place at the time.  One particular example, that is conveniently omitted if the discrimination of the Hutu at the hands of the Belgians during the  time of the colonization  of the country.  Overall, the directors of the film did well to portray the plight of the United Nations and US military advisers despair.
