These habits are important for personal leadership development.

Be Proactive (Habit 1)

This habit mainly entails recognizing the responsibilities that are within our position, rank and power and making them happen. Developing a proactive habit in a leader is crucial in determination of the strength of leadership that the leader would possess, influencing the ability of others to follow. (Covey, 2012)

Begin with and End in Mind (Habit 2)

This habit entails identifying the desired goal and/or objective. This goal and/or objective is the compass that will influence and determine every decision. This is meant to steer these decisions towards the realization of the set goals and/or objectives. This can be applied in planning and budgeting that is usually required of leaders.

Put First things First (Habit 3)

Leaders are boggled down with numerous tasks and deliverables that have to be completed and realized on a daily basis. It is therefore important that a leader be able to prioritize and give preference to tasks and deliverables according to their order of urgency and importance.

Think Win/Win (Habit 4)

A leader needs to recognize when to depend on other parties in order to achieve organization and personal goals and objective. Only by recognizing the need of interdependence can the leader achieve success.

Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (Habit 5)

Communication is key in the success of any relationship (Covey, 2012). Likewise, a leader requires good communication skills in order to achieve and realize organization and personal goals and objectives.

Synergize (Habit 6)

Alliances are important in achieving any set organizational or personal goals. A leader can achieve this by processes outsourcing where partnerships and alliances are created in order to achieve a given business or personal objective.

Sharpen the Saw (Habit 7)

Growth and improvement are important for an individual or an organization to remain relevant. This can be technological or academic. Only through improving different personal and organizational facets can the individual or organization stay up to date with the prevailing market wants, needs and requirements.
