Performance management is management process that enables managers to maintain and improve the performance of an individual, team and the whole organisation. High performance is achieved through the manager understanding and managing performance within an agreed framework of planned goals and objectives, competence requirement and performance standards. The set objectives are key to any performance management.

Organisational objective state what need to be done by individual, team and organisation to attain the mission. Objectives have a time scale and specific standard. They can be defined by goals, targets and tasks to be completed by specific dates. They provide an individual, team and organisation with direction and performance.

Managing and motivating individuals in a team start by agreeing on the right individual targets and objectives.  It is important that individuals draw the performance level that expected from them. Setting specific performance objective enable an individual to know what is expected of them. It also helps them to understand how their performance contributes to the performance of the whole organisation. In addition, it  enables them to monitor their performance. When each member writes their objective, they demonstrate the understanding of the organisational targets and the role they need to pray, to achieve the organisational goal. Moreover, it helps them to own the objectives and use them to guide their performance (Barczak, 2006).
