Humanities, Values, and Religion, Essay Example

Humanities are often looked upon as unnecessary creations of the society. In architecture and arts, through repetition and imagery, artists can represent values of the society and educate a large amount of people. The main goal of humanities, however, according to Aaslestad et al. (2006) is to deliver tools for creativity and innovation for individuals and groups. Sayre (2007) states that religious values and Biblical stories provided inspiration and creativity for artists in the Gothic era, and during the rebirth of Naturalism. As the author (Sayre, 2007, p. 43) confirms: “the cult of the Virgin inspired artists in both cities, and both cities placed themselves under her protection” (Florence and Siena). Further, the design of churches and cathedrals had a symbolic value: the arches and towers showed that humanity is reaching towards Heaven for answers. Inscriptions, such as Notum fecit Dominus -The Lord has made known have accompanied sculptures and paintings.

The connection between humanities and technology has been examined by several contemporary authors. Staff (2009) states that “humanities address ambiguity, doubt, and skepticism—essential underpinnings in a complex and diverse society and a turbulent world”. They attempt to provide answers to questions that can not be answered with a simple yes or no. Interestingly, the author also states that many researchers and scientists are committed to humanistic values. While science provides facts, humanities answer more complex questions. Overall, without standards and values, modern societies would not be able to create systems that are fair and protect individuals. Humanities have their role in research and universities, as well. It is great to develop a new mobile phone that is able to do certain things, but measuring the impact of the device on one’s emotions, contentedness, and people’s motivations is the role of social scientists.
