Strengths of the person(s) with exceptionalities
Samuel can be very assertive and can help himself to a point. He is also very consistent and persistent to achieve whatever he sets his mind on. Samuel is able to see humor in all facets of his life, which helps him to keep from viewing the world as a negative place. He is included in high school classes and is also able to use his intelligence and communication skills to be interactive in those classes. It was very interesting to see that he can also walk if he has the assistance of someone to help. Although he has troubles with his disability, Samuel is able to utilize his strengths and persevere which are highly admirable traits. |
Nature and extent of the contributions that the person(s) with exceptionalities make(s) to the community or setting
The students at his school had a light-hearted view about him, and they often view him as a friend. Through the interactions with Samuel, it opened many people’s eyes to the truth about cerebral palsy. Samuel has a phenomenal sense of humor that makes people laugh when they speak with him. He was also able to contribute in many ways to help his family. Many people have multiple prejudices about the extent that Samuel and other individuals with cerebral palsy can contribute to any given setting. He surpasses their expectations and helps to constructively contribute in most environments. |
Expectations that others have for the person(s) with exceptionalities
The expectations that others had for Samuel were quite low. When he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 1-year-old, his mother was very afraid. She and the rest of the family had low expectations for Samuel’s abilities to function. His father had many prejudice views that mirrored those of the outside world. Many people make fun of the handicapped, so this was also something that worried his parents. There was also many times where his disease isolated the family in public. It was clear throughout the film that most people had extremely low expectations for Samuel and others with cerebral palsy mostly because of negative prejudices associated with the disease. |
Extent to which the person(s) with exceptionalities demonstrate self-advocacy skills
Samuel is able to push his own wheelchair, and move around to where he wishes to go and how fast. This shows that he is able to make his own decisions and physically move about without the constant assistance of others. This is also proven by his active participation in athletics as he plays T-ball and basketball, and also trains for the Special Olympics. He can also communicate by using a computer to talk and by saying that he wants to be an astronaut. He is able to use analysis and critical thinking to show he is independent and able to make rational decisions; furthermore, he is able to communicate these to his friends and family. |
Nature and extent of the social relationships of the person(s) with exceptionalities
Samuel is able to have very strong social relationships with his friends and family. He and his brother have built a very strong relationship. They are best friends and spend very much time with one another. Samuel smiles and laughs a lot with others in school and in the local community. He can be stubborn at times because he is very persistent, but he continues to work to build relationships with everyone. Samuel truly enjoys all people and life. |
