Iron jawed Angels, was direct by filmmaker Katja Von Garnier and starred Angelica Houston, Julia Ormond, Hilary Swank, Molly Parker  and Francis O’Connor.  The film was set in an important part of American history.  It focuses upon a feminist Alice Paul, as played by Hilary Swank, who risked her life in order to fight for the female right to vote and American citizenship for women.  She was responsible for compiling the first equal rights amendments to be put before Congress.  Together with other social reformers, she led the struggle against more conservative forces, in order to get Congress to pass the 19th amendment.

Alice Paul was one of the leading campaigners who fought for women’s suffrage and historians credit her for significant accomplishments in this field.  Young women can readily relate to this film.  During the era of World War I, the US president Woodrow Wilson went to length to talk about the need for democracy in Germany, whilst denying and ignoring democratic representation in America for female rights.  In a more up-to-date context, the recent speeches from President Bush about Iraq’s need for democracy has a similar point B. you can associate with.  The importance of the movie is truly contained in the message of peoples suffering in order to enable your right to vote, with all the rights that are attributed to a democratic society.  The core theme of movie supports those who were denied self-government and denied personal choices by majority claims of those who profess to love them and want to protect them.
